Paul’s Ambassador

“For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church,” 1 Corinthians 4:17.

My son Adam was invited to be an official Student Ambassador of the United States when he was a teenager. As an ambassador, he had to learn many things about the United States and what it meant to be an ambassador that would represent our country. Part of this experience included a three-week trip to many countries in Europe in which they interacted with their counterparts of each country, attended their parliament proceedings, and participated in other official government activities. While this was an exciting opportunity for my son, he still had to realize that he was not there to represent himself but to represent his country and the current administration.

Timothy was used as an ambassador of the truth that Paul had taught in every church. Like the apostle Paul, Timothy had to faithfully present the truth as it was given to him because it was a message that ultimately came from the Lord. Paul also recognized that he was an ambassador for the gospel when he said, “For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak” (Ephesians 6:20). Whether it were Paul or Timothy, their mission was the same, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). The mission is the same for you and me; we are to represent Christ and the glorious truth of the gospel to a lost and dying world that needs to accept Him as their Savior.

JUST A QUESTION

What kind of ambassador are you? Could you be trusted to represent the truth of God’s word; to represent Christ?

Fools for Christ's Sake

“We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised,” 1 Corinthians 4:10.

The call of God upon a man’s life to become a minister of the gospel is a very serious matter. I believe many of God’s people do not truly understand the sacrifices and struggles of pastors and missionaries and the various hardships they face. Consider Moses and the continual complaints directed at him by the children of Israel. They almost stoned him on more than one occasion! And yet, he interceded to the Lord on Israel’s behalf time and again. What love he had in his heart for the Lord and His people. This is often what the life of a minister of God looks like.

Paul and the apostles were dedicated ministers, fully given to Christ and spreading the gospel everywhere they went. Although they were mistreated and persecuted by the world around them, they never ceased to share the love of Christ. Sadly, there were those in the church at Corinth that looked down upon Paul with critical eyes and judgment. Yet, Paul loved them with all his heart as can be seen in his letters clearly. He prayed for them, cried for them and implored them to live for Christ.

There may be times you are tempted to complain about your church or pastor, but this is not pleasing to the Lord. Your pastor and spiritual leaders need prayer, love and encouragement. Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” It is beneficial to have a joyful pastor, so put a stop to gossip or hurtful words, and rather uplift him. May all things be done to edify one another.

REFLECTION

“Do all things without murmurings and disputings” (Philippians 2:14).

The Message of the Cross Was Reserved

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God,” 1 Corinthians 2:12.

It is interesting and, at times, quite comical to read about the interactions between Jesus and His disciples in the gospels. In the early stages of their growth, the apostles of Christ were often not on the same page with Jesus at all. One such instance is in Matthew 16:5-12, when Jesus warned them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, speaking of sin. However, the disciples believed Jesus was referring to actual bread since they had forgotten to bring bread with them that day. We find this humorous because we can relate to such misunderstandings. It begs the question, how often is the Lord trying to tell us something and we miss the point?

The only way we can understand the deep things of God is by His Spirit. Those of the world who do not know Jesus as their Savior, are not able to discern spiritual things as they are not indwelt with the Spirit of God. That is why it is not profitable to argue doctrinal issues with unsaved people. They need to hear the gospel, plain and simple. But our Lord will reveal the wonderful riches of Christ and His Word to those who love Him and follow Him fully. The question is, are we listening?

As a disciple of Christ, you have the Holy Spirit actively working within you. But are you truly seeking after the deep truths found in His Word? Study the Bible with the intent to know Christ more deeply, and recognize it is the Spirit of God teaching you and that you can learn nothing apart from Him. Trust Him to open His Word to you as you seek Him with your whole heart.

REFLECTION

How much time do you give to spiritual things versus things of the world?

The Apostle's Reason

“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God,” 1 Corinthians 2:5.

Habits—you need to make them wisely: the kind you make early in life could make or break you later in life. I learned this the hard way. I was super skinny as a child and could eat almost anything I wanted in whatever quantity I wanted. I could go all day on chocolate and sweets. I remember sitting down one afternoon after a long day at school and eating an entire row of cookies out of the box. I cannot do this anymore. Now, with type-2 diabetes, I can only dream of single bites of cookies, let alone whole sleeves of them. Evidently, not all calories are the same.

What you allow in your mouth affects your body. What you allow in your heart and soul affects your spirit. Paul understood this, and he communicated this to the Corinthians when he told them that he had spoken to them in plain words rather than enticing words so “that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God,” (1 Corinthians 2:5). Paul believed that how they received the gospel and how they received the Word of God mattered. If their faith was built on anything but the Word and the Spirit, they were likely to fall away from serving God.

REFLECTION

Watch what you eat, physically and spiritually. There are long-term consequences with both.

The Apostle's Resolve

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified,” 1 Corinthians 2:1, 2.

We live in a day where knowledge is right at our fingertips. Gone are the days of going to the library to do research. And thanks to the internet and social media, popular opinion has become more important to most people than actual truth. The concern is how this is impacting the kingdom of God and Christianity as a whole. God’s Word is truth (John 17:17). Yet, people of the world are no longer looking to the Word of God to find the answers they seek. Many are turning to so-called preachers online that sound very enticing. Some speak with great eloquence and others use modern language to draw in the younger crowd. But both are leading many astray with their false teaching.

We get ourselves into trouble if we look to mimic these false teachers simply because they appear successful. There were plenty of false prophets in Paul’s day as well, but he was determined to stay with the simple message of the gospel. He did not put on an arrogant display to show his abundant knowledge to the people of Corinth, nor did he speak with eloquence to draw them in. He gave them the message of Christ and the cross, plain and simple.

The fact that the Father sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins is so simple and beautiful. You do not need to be a theologian to tell others that Christ died on the cross and offers everlasting life to all who believe. God is not looking for eloquence or perfection, but those who are sincere and willing to be used by Him.

REFLECTION

Do you seek answers from the Lord, or look to the world? Seek Godly wisdom.

The Reason for God's Wisdom

“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty,” 1 Corinthians 1:27.

An elderly pastor moved to the area as he was retiring from full-time pastoral duty. Our church soon called him to be our associate pastor and bus minister. About ten years after he first came to church, I had surrendered to the gospel ministry and had some questions and issues that I wanted to talk to the pastor about, but he was not available, so I asked this man what he thought about my situation. Even though he said that he was not sure how he might be able to help me, he told me what he thought the Bible had to say on the matter. The Lord used him to give me the best biblical advice a person could receive. This old, thin, frail looking, quiet, unassuming man was one of the hardest working, dedicated and wisest men that I have ever been blessed to know.

Godly wisdom is one of the most important things a person can attain in this life. James wrote, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17). Godly wisdom will always lead you down the right path; it will always show you how to handle a situation; it will always be better than the wisdom of this world. The world thinks they have a monopoly on wisdom, but the Lord likes to show them that He is the one who truly makes people wise.

FINAL THOUGHT

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).

The Result of God's Wisdom

"For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe,"

1 Corinthians 1:21

Servant leadership is a leadership style in which the leader’s goal is to serve others both within and without the organization he or she is leading. Priorities are given to meeting the needs of other employees, involving others in all stages of the work, and causing others to truly feel like they are a part of the success. Servant leadership strives to be ethical, character-based and others-centered. Under this model of leadership, a strong leader is one who does not play the role of the strong man. The successful leader is the one who spreads his success to others in the organization.

This sounds paradoxical, and in many ways it is. But it also should sound like Jesus. His teachings, and specifically His teachings about leadership, are the seeds of this leadership style. Jesus repeatedly showed that the way up is down, that the greatest must be the least and that the first must be last.

Paradox is the way of Jesus. In our text, God upended human wisdom by His foolishness. Preaching, and specifically the preaching of a dying Savior on a cross who rose again the third day, is absolute foolishness to the world. A Savior does not die—He lives. A righteous person is not crucified on a cross—he is elevated to a throne. And dead men stay dead. Jesus turned all of this worldly wisdom upside down. The paradox of the cross, and Jesus’ perfect example of servant leadership, made the wisdom of the world into foolishness, and the foolishness of God into victory. Ironically, death brought life, the cross brought the crown and dead men do come back to life.

PRAYER

“Father, use my weakness for your strength, my inability for your ability and my ignorance for your wisdom, Amen.”

The Response to God's Wisdom

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God," 1 Corinthians 1:18

I recently had the opportunity to attend an amazing outreach at the Grand Prix in Long Beach, California. As we walked along the streets passing out Bibles, I was compelled to go speak to a young man sitting on the grass by himself away from the crowd. He was open to talking about God, but as soon as Jesus was mentioned, his demeanor quickly changed. He began to spout philosophical ideas to try and refute the deity of Christ. At first, I became frustrated as my attempt to share the good news of Jesus Christ was being so adamantly rejected. My heart’s desire was for this man to know the truth. After praying in my heart, the Lord calmed my spirit, and I simply asked him if I could share what Jesus had done for me. Praise God he was willing to listen, although his heart remained hardened.

As we are called to go into the world and tell others about salvation in and through Jesus Christ, we will find many who will not be receptive to the message of the cross. It can be difficult for us who have received His precious gift to see so many reject the promise of everlasting life. This hits even closer to our heart when it is a loved one such as a spouse, child, parent or sibling.

Continue to pray for your lost loved ones and ask the Lord for boldness to be the witness He would have you to be. This is the prayer for my own life as well. There may be hundreds that reject the message, but there will be great rejoicing in Heaven for even one lost soul that repents (Luke 15:7).

REFLECTION

Have you made spreading the gospel your life’s purpose? Pray for a heart burdened for lost souls.

The Day of Christ

“And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed,” Joel 2:27.

It is difficult to see the events occurring today and not become discouraged about the future of the nation of Israel. Antisemitism has exploded. Israel’s enemies have become more brazen, and violence escalates daily. As we see prophecy fulfilled before our eyes, we know that God’s judgment cannot be faraway.

But one day everything will change. Israel will no longer be the scourge of the nations. Jews will not be hunted or hated. Jewish fathers and mothers will not be afraid for their children to play in the streets. And no one in Israel will ever go hungry again. Yes, one day everything will be radically different.

Because one day, Jesus Christ will return to this earth, set His feet on the Mount of Olives, conquer His enemies, bind Satan and establish His earthly kingdom. Jesus Christ will be the King of this earth, ruling and reigning in perfect righteousness for one thousand years. Israel will be restored. Physically, the land will flourish, and all the land God promised Abraham will finally belong to the Jewish people. Nationally, Jerusalem will be known for truth, and kings will come from across the world to learn the words of God. Jesus will protect Israel, and she will enjoy true peace. Spiritually, the Jewish people will accept Jesus as their Messiah, and worship Him as King of kings and Lord of lords. Every promise that God has ever made to Israel will be gloriously fulfilled.

After the devasting destruction of seven years of tribulation, Christ will return in glory with His saints to restore and replenish this earth. The changes will be so dramatic everyone on earth will know that Jesus Christ is Lord!

THOUGHT

The results of genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is forgiveness of sin and a glorious eternity with God. Are you ready for His return?
