God showed up in a special way today. Let me explain.
I'm one of the pastors here at Mt. Pleasant. This door you see in the picture goes to our life center and my office. It normally stays locked outside of service times, even when I'm in the office. We unlocked it this morning for just a little bit as we delivered some things to the church. This afternoon, I noticed it was still unlocked, and as I reached to lock it, I felt a small nudge in my heart that said, "Just leave it open for a little bit longer." That made no sense, and I couldn't tell right away if it was just a crazy random thought in my head or if God was gently trying to tell me something. It was a strong enough nudge, though, that I decided to leave it open. Less than 5 minutes later, a sweet 87-year-old lady stepped through those same doors looking for help. If the doors had been locked, we probably wouldn't have heard her even if she had bothered to knock, simply because of where we were in the building. She had been driving on the highway, lost, with no phone, no memory of her address, her last name, or her daughter's name with whom she had just moved in. She saw the church and decided to see if we could help. Thankfully, with very little investigating, we were able to find her new address and daughter's number written down in her purse. We were able to lead her home to her daughter just a few miles down the road without a problem. As we led our new friend home, the small nudge from earlier that I wasn't sure was God or my crazy thoughts became a lot easier to understand. What seemed like a small nudge or crazy thought was God going before His elderly daughter, answering her prayers as she prayed for help while driving down the highway lost. She didn't know that God was answering those prayers, and I didn't even know she was praying or needing help. God knew, and in His steadfast love, He was at work leaving the doors open that needed to be open.
Our sermon text for this Sunday morning is Psalm 136, which starts out by saying, "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever."
