Pastor Barbara Taylor Minton served her last Sunday with us on February 23rd. The congregation honored her with a parting gift, a plaque of her service with us, and a fellowship meal.

In parting she remembered her time with us with these words:

"I will grieve the loss of our congregational relationship because it's been an important part of my life for the last 13 years. You have made this a safe place for us to explore the Scriptures together, to explore new ideas, to be more involved in community ministries ...and for all that, I am grateful.

"I leave you with a challenge--or, better said, something to ponder. Reflect on how you have grown in the last 13 years. Do a self-evaluation. Examine your own spiritual health. How have you grown in your faith and involvement in God's reign?"

On Sunday, February 2, Pastor Barbara Taylor Minton submitted her retirement, effective at the end of February. She has served the congregation for 13 years.

In a letter to the elders she wrote:
For the last four years I have felt my strength to serve this congregation diminishing. You have responded graciously to each of my requests to undergird my ministry in spite of my declining energy and I appreciate that.

I am grateful for the preaching team that formed in September 2023 to keep our congregation viable. So I say their names: Fay Blevins, Tammie Lanham Douglas, Thomas Minton, and Jeff Wells, as well as the community ministers who came in one time to supplement our pulpit.

In the last month my physical, mental, and emotional stamina has noticeably declined even more. I have been derelict in my pastoral visits and often feel muddled in my teaching and preaching responsibilities. Too often I wake up feeling tired and overwhelmed.

Now after much prayer and consultation with Thomas, I have decided it is time for me to retire, completely. I have set my retirement for the end of this month. My final Sunday will be February 23rd.

I have been blessed to have the privilege to minister with this congregation for thirteen years! …more than half of my time in ordained ministry!

My heart is heavy with this decision, but I am at peace, knowing this is right for you as a congregation and for me personally. The Lord has, indeed, saved the best to the last for me. I appreciate Berea for being that congregation. This eldership has been the most supportive that I have had in my 24 years of ordained ministry. You are the best!

Honor Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would use Emmett Till's lynching as an example of “the evil of racial injustice.” “The crying voice of a little Emmett Till screaming from the rushing waters in Mississippi” -MLK (May'63)

We honor and remember his legacy on his 96th Birthday today.
