Dolphins often seem to be smiling, and they sure make me smile! Also, they are a huge challenge to photograph, because they pop in and out of the water so quickly and unexpectedly. On a more philosophical note, they always make me ponder what it might be like to be a very intelligent, social, and communicative creature who lives in a world with so many dimensions and no material possessions.

I was getting ready to lead an evening program on Zoom last week, when I looked out the window at the cloudy sky and saw a break in the clouds with an amazing cloud-bow that looked almost psychedelic. It was like an eye into the sky. So I had to go out on the balcony and take a photo.

I watched three ospreys circling again and again above the bay, sometimes hovering in the air, once even diving in coming back empty-clawed. Then one dove and emerged with what looks like a small horseshoe crab. They earned it!

No, not my photo, but it’s a photo that I might be taking in January as I have been invited to cohost a bucket list trip to South Africa (including spectacular scenery, and a safari). And you can join me! The triple have lots of options for how long you stay and where you go. There will be history, culture, food, and lots, and lots of nature and an escape from Winter in North America. There will be opportunities to meet and spend Shabbat with local Jewish communities, although you definitely don’t have to be Jewish to come and can opt in or out on those.

My collection of carnivorous plants is thriving on our patio. Seems like an odd choice for a mostly vegetarian/pescatarian, but I started by getting just one for bug control, and it took off from there. Now I’m fascinated by their beauty and weirdness. Believe it or not, the hardest one to grow has been the little Venus fly trap (last frame).

Today was my day off, so I did one of my favorite things, taking a dolphin watching cruise on the Delaware Bay with Cape Water Tours. It was a very hazy and humid morning, but worth the shvitz (steam bath) for the amazing experience of floating in the midst of a pod of dolphins near the point, the place where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The crew said it was one of the best mornings for dolphins all year. 🐬
