“What if it isn’t about getting out of the desert? What if we are called to dwell in our doubts, fears, anxieties, and brokenness? What if we are meant to stand in solidarity with those trapped in their own wilderness experiences? I wonder if we can imagine making a home right here, a place existing in the tension between desolation and burgeoning possibility.”

"What do we make of the practice of mourning?…The rending of hearts and of garments of mourning, the calling for a holy fast and stillness, and the expectant joy of rediscovering the relenting love of God are deeply tied to the process of fasting, weeping, and mourning."

“We, just as we are, are enough. That is enough for our existence, and that is enough for God. It doesn’t matter what others think. What matters is that we’re authentic, that our faith is authentic, and that we are ourselves before God.”

"What if, alongside the certainty of death, we are also reminded of God’s expansive grace? What if on this day we said to one another, 'From stardust you have come, and to stardust you shall one day return'?"

Next week begins with a day to celebrate and remember the life and the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On this day we take a look back at the influence that King had on the civil rights movement and the struggle to end racial discrimination. We celebrate the strides that were made during his lifetime and we take action to advance the elimination of white supremacy.

I encourage you to find some time to read or listen to his famous I Have A Dream speech and reflect on the following questions:
Why does King choose the word 'dream'?
Why does King quote The Declaration of Independence?
How has your understanding of King's 'dream' changed over time?
What is your 'dream' for racial equity?
What is one thing you can do to help make your 'dream' for racial equity a reality?

This is Martin Luther King Speech that moved the world."I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for f...

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into God’s presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
It is God that made us - we belong to the one that created us;
we are God’s people, the sheep of God’s pasture.

Enter the Holy gates with thanksgiving,
and the eternal courts with praise.
Give thanks to God, bless the name of the LORD.

For the Lord is good;
God’s steadfast love endures forever!
God is faithful to all generations!

Sunday's scripture was Psalm 70. Brendan helped us enter this lament through his beautiful weaving of spoken and sung verses together into this prayerful expression of suffering, and hope for redemption.

Post Election Prayer
The Work of Democracy by Susan Chupungco

When the ballots have all been cast,

When the campaign ads are gone,

When the outcome of the election is clear,

When the reality of what’s next begins to sink in,

The work of democracy begins:

To find the capacity to stay engaged and hold our leaders accountable,

To heal those traumatized by racism, homophobia, and xenophobia,

To feed the economy so that none starve while others get fat,

To release the unjustly imprisoned,

To rebuild the systems that have worked to oppress,

To bring peace among others and ourselves,

To make ours a world that reflects the kindom of God.
