Why do Unitarian Universalists recoil at the word “God”? This Sunday, join our guest Rev. Christina Sillari as we explore our faith’s theological history to re-frame the divine. Moving past a distant, oppressive judge, we look at the sacred as an all-encompassing energy of life itself—like water to a fish. By embracing our deep interdependence, we discover that we serve, save, and embody the divine through our care for one another.

Last month, Rev. Barnaby reflected on the power of the UUA’s new Love at the Center Graphic and promised to continue today with a look at how Science intersects with our purposes and use of spiritual metaphors. So, here we go!

UU’s have often struggled to explain our faith with others. Our discomfort with theological language has allowed the American religious right to “own” religion, but when we use the common language of religion, we affirm that religious life is completely consistent with progressive thought. All are welcome to join guest Garnett Losak for a discussion of UU evangelism after the service as well.

Cosmic Conversation, Connection and Cuisine Invitation!

You're invited to a cosmic conversation on Sunday, May 3, from 12-1:30 p.m.

Following our morning service and our coffee/fellowship time, join our guest speaker, Garnett Losak, for a facilitated discussion of Unitarian Universalist evangelism. We will explore what it means to share our faith with others, how we use (or avoid) certain words and phrases, and why we may (or may not) hesitate to share our Good News. We will follow a covenant-group structure that includes inspirational readings and questions, respectful sharing, and deep listening. To honor everyone's time, we will begin on time at noon and end at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome!

Light lunch and childcare provided.

This Tuesday night, April 21, at 7 p.m., the Women’s Rights Alliance of New York State is holding a Zoom event entitled “Frank Leslie Buys Women’s Votes.”

Carrie Chapman Catt said that the passage of New York State’s Women’s Suffrage Amendment in 1917 was the “Gettysburg of the Women’s Suffrage movement.” Yet, just two years earlier, New York State had voted the same measure down. What changed in two short years? One of the major differences was money. Where did the money come from?

Enter Frank Leslie – just one of the eight names Miriam Leslie would have during her lifetime.

Who was this woman who would leave nearly two million dollars to Catt to fund the fight for women’s suffrage? Where did her money come from?

We’ll be exploring the whole fascinating story in this 30-minute Zoom presentation, “Frank Leslie Buys Women’s Votes.”

The event is moderated by Allison Heard, who is on the board of Women's Rights Alliance of NYS. Pre-registration is required. Click below:

As a lifelong UU raised in a California congregation his mother helped organize in the early 1950’s, Rev. Barnaby Feder cherishes (not always fondly) the stories that illuminate how Unitarian Universalism is evolving. He has come to see the Bible and the Star Wars movies as rich metaphors for what we’ve been co-creating in his lifetime. No wonder the title of this sermon has been the one unchanging bumper sticker on his family car for more than two decades.
(PS – this worship service can be regarded as Part 1 of a two-part vision which will be completed when he visits in May. At that time, he will reflect on the relationship between Science and our new national by-law describing Unitarian Universalism as a denomination putting Love at the center of a ring of values including Justice, Equity, Transformation, Pluralism, Interconnectedness, and Generosity)

In today’s Connect in Community service, we’ll explore how small stories help us build strong connections. Through reflection and shared activities, we’ll practice getting to know one another more deeply—strengthening the sense of community that holds us all.
