Hebrews 11:10, For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

Abraham was promised a land which his descendants would possess. But he himself never possessed it. For his entire life he was a sojourner in Canaan, which he was okay with, since he "was looking forward to the city" in heaven built by God, his fullest inheritance. Abraham was a sojourner, and to outsiders he probably appeared to be nothing more than a nomad. But the fact is, he was headed somewhere, to a city he could not yet see.

Quiet Reflections: You and I are sojourners like Abraham. And like him, we too are "wandering" towards a "city" built by God. The world walks (or runs?) towards wealth, comfort, fun, s*x, safety, and so on. We walk (run?) towards a home we have never seen. Remember where our home is.

1 Peter 2:11, Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

When we "settle down in a land," it is easy to start pursuing and worrying about what the "natives" pursue and worry about, most of which, but not all, is okay. Of course, some of what the "natives" pursue is far from okay. The Canaanites were both promiscuous and idolatrous. The Israelites eventually became just like them, even choosing to worship their gods. The danger for us is the same. We are in the world but not of it. Or at least that is true in theory. Sometime we are in it and of it - sadly enough, that is.

Quiet Reflections: From what do you "abstain" as a sojourner? How are you in the world but not of it? Remember where home is. Remember where your treasure is. Remember where your Father is.

Exodus 22:21, You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Sojourners were in a vulnerable position. As non-citizens, they were sometimes taken advantage of. The Jews knew this all too well. They had gone down to Egypt at Joseph's request during the days of the famine. When they went down, they were treated as honored guests. But over time, Egypt enslaved them. The Jews were told to remember those days and treat sojourners in their land with respect.

Quiet Reflections: Those who trust in the Lord are often attacked by the country in which they live. We see this happening all around the globe. That is because, as sojourners, we do not have the same values and beliefs as do they. It is good to remember how vulnerable we sometimes are and, remembering, treat other vulnerable people with respect.

1 Chronicles 29:14-15, But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding."

David recognized a number of things in regard to the saint's earthly existence. One, we are "strangers" or sojourners here on earth. Two, "all things come from God." Everyone everywhere depends on God whether they believe it or not, but this is especially true of the sojourner who lives in a vulnerable position. And three, "our days are like a shadow." They quickly pass by. So, what is the takeaway? We should hold all things loosely and trust in God.

Quiet Reflections: As sojourners, "strangers," in this land, you and I don't build elaborate "homes." We could spend all our time chasing after the same things people in the world chase after, but we choose not to do so. Instead, we trust God to provide for us just as he did for Israel when they wandered in the Wilderness. He led them by day and night as a pillar of cloud and fire. So, too, he leads us. He provided manna for them. So, too, he provides for us our daily bread. He gave them water from the rock. So, too, he refreshes us with the Living Water. God is good. Trust him.

Philippians 3:20, But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Jews were called to live in booths to remind them of how they had been sojourners forty years in the Wilderness. You and I are a lot like them. We too are sojourners here on this earth. The Jews wandered in the Wilderness the forty years and did not enter into their promised land. While we wander, we too do not enter into ours. But just as they one day did enter the promise land under the leadership of Joshua, so too we will one day enter into ours under the leadership of Jesus Christ. Still, just as it was good for the Jews to remember that they had once been sojourners, it is good for us to remember that we currently are.

Quiet Reflections: How deep do your roots go down in this world, in the here-and-now? We are not called to build elaborate "houses," so-to-speak, in this life. We are called to live in "booths," or tents, like the nomads we are. This world is not are home, but we are heading towards it. It is good to remember where our home is.
