Canela for Latin America and Africa CANELA’s mission is to provide value based education and job training to families in Latin America and Africa.

CANELA has found that value based education can help reduce crime, violence, bullying, gangs, the use of drugs, and young pregnancies. CANELA - The Catholic Association for the New Evangelization in Latin America and Africa - is a non-profit organization under Pennsylvania law. It is dedicated to creating awareness and raising funds to support the Catholic Church's evangelization efforts among Latin American and African peoples, working closely with local bishops, priests and pastoral workers. Though we support many projects which contribute to the material well being of Latin America and Africa, our priority and the condition for help is a direct effect on the transmission of the contents of the Catholic Faith.

What would you do if you had an accident in the jungle — with no doctor, no hospital, and no health insurance? 🏍️

This is Father John's reality. To reach the far side of his parish in western Zambia, he rides a rundown motorbike on roads that are really just mud paths through the jungle. He's crashed more times than he can count — the last time breaking his foot in several places, with no real way to get help.

Snakebite antivenom only works if it stays refrigerated. 🐍

But in many remote areas where Catholic missionaries serve, there are venomous snakes — and no refrigerator. These missions are often too poor to even have reliable electricity, let alone the equipment to store life-saving medicine.

Imagine getting malaria while helping deliver a baby in a remote African village — and having no health insurance to treat it. 😔

This is the daily reality for many missionary priests and sisters in Africa and Latin America. Most serve without a salary. Many have no health coverage at all.

Sister Maru got malaria in Ethiopia. Father John broke his foot in a motorbike accident in Zambia. Father Candido has served his parish from a wheelchair for 20 years.

Our Missionary Health Fund helps pay for their health insurance, surgeries, and medicine — so they can keep serving in health.
