Can You Help Unlock a Brighter Future for 30 Students Like Me?
Salam! My name is Bendita Tabu, and I am 23 years old. By the loving grace of God, I am currently studying nursing in Uganda, and I will sit for my final examination this November.
My journey with Harvesters began when I was only three years old. They took me into their care, and I grew up with the support, guidance, and Christian foundation that shaped much of who I am today. I will always be grateful that God was at the center of my upbringing and that people were willing to invest in my future.
With the support of faithful servants, I completed primary and high school successfully. In South Sudan, continuing education can be challenging, and having the opportunity to attend school and receive the support I needed was a rare privilege.
That opportunity continued into higher education. Today, I am studying nursing in Arua, Uganda, with a scholarship that covers my tuition, accommodation, learning materials, and transportation.
For me, this support means much more than having my school fees paid. It means staying in school, having a place to live, accessing the materials I need to learn, and traveling when necessary. Most importantly, it has allowed me to focus on my studies and prepare for the profession I hope to build my life around.
Nursing was not originally the career I had planned to pursue. But as I began learning and working with patients, my perspective changed. I saw a great need for nurses who are patient enough to listen, compassionate enough to understand, and willing to help people when they are most vulnerable.
Over the past two years of studying and practicing nursing, I have discovered how much I enjoy caring for patients, particularly the elderly. Working with them has helped me recognize an area where I feel called to serve.
My education has therefore given me more than a qualification. It has helped me discover a calling.
After completing my nursing studies, I hope to continue my education and eventually specialize in gerontological nursing, focusing on the care of elderly people. I want to develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide them with compassionate, dignified care.
I also love leading worship, and I hope that wherever my career takes me, I will continue to use my voice to worship and serve God.
When I look back at where my journey began, I am deeply grateful. I was a three-year-old child growing up under the care of others. Today, I am preparing to become a nurse and dreaming about how I can use my profession to serve others.
That journey was made possible because people chose to invest in my education.
A scholarship can look like a tuition payment, a room, a textbook, or transportation. But behind each of those things is a student who is given another opportunity to keep learning, another step toward graduation, and another chance to discover what they can contribute to their community.
My story is one example of what that investment can make possible. As I prepare for my final examination, I am grateful to everyone who has helped me come this far. I hope that one day I can give back through the patients I care for, the elderly people I serve, and the lives I have the opportunity to touch.
