Shavuot and Simchat Torah – what do they have in common? They both center around the Torah.

On Shavuot, we received the Torah at Mount Sinai and entered into a covenant with G-d in which we agreed to live by the principles and commandments set forth in the Torah. As with many other synagogues, at MHJC we follow the custom of learning on the first night, as we constantly study the Torah to gain new insights, interpretations and applications from generation to generation.

Every year on Simchat Torah we finish reading the Torah and then start again, thereby reaffirming that commitment and celebrating our continued faith. It is a journey that never ends and one that we joyfully embrace.

This year, that journey takes on an even deeper meaning. Through its DEAR project, Manetto Hill Jewish Center is rededicating an existing Torah in memory of the victims of October 7th. The Torah will be formally rededicated on September 6th, and we will celebrate with it for the first time on Simchat Torah.

A Torah that has already lived through generations of Jewish life will now carry an added layer of memory, resilience, and holiness; honoring those we lost while affirming the strength and continuity of the Jewish people.

As we celebrate the gift of the Torah this Shavuot, we invite you to be part of this meaningful mitzvah. Your support will help make this rededication possible and ensure that this Torah continues to inspire future generations.

Please contact the synagogue office for more information (516-935-5454) or email us at [email protected]

It’s almost Shavuot!

On Shavout, we commemorate our people receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. As part of the celebration, it is customary to learn and study Torah together and to eat delicious dairy foods such as cheesecake, blintzes and ice cream.

But what is the connection between eating dairy foods and celebrating the giving of the Torah? One of the explanations connects dairy foods to the Torah’s description of the land of Israel as a land “flowing with milk and honey.”

Another explanation is that we consider the Torah as nourishing as milk and that eating dairy on Shavuot is our way of honoring Hashem for giving the Torah to our people. As we eat delicious cheesecake and other dairy favorites next week, we are reminded of how the Torah should bring sweetness and joy into our lives.

May we all feel that sweetness and joy in our hearts as we celebrate the holiday!

We are truly excited to share something new and meaningful about the future of our Religious School.

Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, we’ll be introducing a fresh approach to Jewish learning—one that reflects what we all want for our children: not just education, but connection. Connection to Judaism, to our traditions, to our community, and to their own growing sense of Jewish identity.

We want our students to feel that Judaism is something they don’t just learn about, but something they experience, take pride in, and carry with them as part of who they are.

This new model blends strong core learning with hands-on enrichment experiences, giving each child the opportunity to build a solid foundation while also engaging with Jewish life in creative, meaningful ways.
