Professional Assessment of Baskets on Point, Center Medallion Quilt, Made by Miss Rook of Midhurst, Sussex, England, c1860
88”x87” Hand pieced, hand quilted and the handles of the baskets are machine appliqued. The solid red in the baskets, etc. is a twill weave – all the other fabrics are plain, flat weave, cotton. The back is a very fine white cotton. The quilting is very typical of its type. The leaf forms quilted in each corner very typical of English and Welch quilts. The rest is straight grid. Not sure about batting. It appears very dense. If it were American, batting might suggest a woolen blanket, but not convinced. The binding is as one would expect. Knife edge secured with two rows of machine stitching close to the edge of the quilt. It is in amazingly good condition, never used, never washed.
