PRAY LIKE…
“…like prayer makes a difference.”
Pray like Nehemiah
The biblical account of Nehemiah really begins with the Babylonian captivity of Israel.
God commanded and expected obedience.
Exodus 19:5 “Now therefore, if you will indeed __________________ _________
________________ and keep my covenant…”
In Deuteronomy 28:2 God promised blessings to come ‘if’ or “because you
_______________ _________ _______________ of the Lord your God.”
But if they did not obey Deuteronomy 28:15
…”that all these ____________________ will come upon you….”
The prophet Jeremiah, one of the prophets of the exile reminded the Israelites of God’s words, Jeremiah 11:3-5
Jeremiah 11:8, “Yet they _________________ _______________ __________________
Or incline their ear, but everyone followed the dictates of his _________________
_____________________ ….”
Thus God allowed Israel to be conquered first by Egypt, then when Babylon defeated Egypt at
the battle of Carchemish (605 or 606 B.C.). Babylon invaded Israel and carried away the first
captives, including Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
When Babylon was defeated by the Medes and Persians, King Cyrus of Persia, Ezra 1:1, made a
proclamation to let the Israelites return back to Israel.
While Sheshbazzar was the prince of Judah, Ezra 1:8, Zerubbabel assumes the leadership over
the returning Israelites.
Upon returning to Jerusalem they began to restore true worship to God, Ezra 3:2
They “…built the alter of God of Israel…
…as it is ___________________ in the Law of Moses….”
Ezra 3:4 “They also kept the feast of Tabernacles, ____________ ____________
_____________ _______________,…:
In Ezra 7:8 in about 458 B.C. Ezra, the priest, came to Jerusalem. Ezra led a second group of
Israelites home from Babylon. He dedicated himself to the teaching of God’s word to the
people. See Nehemiah 8:1-8
About 13 years after Ezra’s return a report came from Jerusalem back to the Jews remaining in
Babylon. Nehemiah 1:3 The walls of the city of Jerusalem and its gates were broken down and
the gates were burned, leaving the Jews in Jerusalem in a difficult position to defend themselves.
In Nehemiah 1:4 Nehemiah said,
“I was _______________ and _________________ before the God of heaven.”
1. Who did Nehemiah pray to?
Nehemiah 1:5 _______________ _________________ ____ ____________________.
2. Who does God keep covenant and mercy with, Nehemiah 1:5
_________________ __________________ _______________ _______________
And _______________ _______________ ___________________ .
3. What was Nehemiah’s first request? Nehemiah 1:6
4. How often did Nehemiah pray?
5. Who did Nehemiah pray for?
6. What did Nehemiah confess?
How was he different than the man in Luke 18:11?
How was Nehemiah similar to the man in Luke 18:13?
Nehemiah knew, Nehemiah 1:8 that if God’s people were unfaithful, God would scatter
them as He had scattered them to Babylon.
7. What else did Nehemiah know? Nehemiah 1:9
8. What was Nehemiah reminding God of in Nehemiah 1:10?
9. Finally, Nehemiah 1:11
Nehemiah acknowledged himself to be one of God’s __________________
He asked that God would _______________ him and grant him _________________
In Nehemiah 2 the prayer begins to be answered. King Artaxerxes recognizes his unhappiness
and asks in Nehemiah 2:4
“What do you request?”
What did Nehemiah immediately do?
If you could imagine the words of Nehemiah’s prayer what would they be?
Consider the setting
Note: When you pray – expect that God may use you in His answer.
When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he surveyed the wall. Nehemiah 2:11-16. In spite of
opposition they set about to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem, Nehemiah 4:6 “the people had a
mind to work.”
Nehemiah 4:9 “Nevertheless we made our ____________ ______ ______________...”
And ________________ a watch ….”
They prayed and did their part.
They planned Nehemiah 4:10-23
In spite of the opposition Nehemiah 6:15
How long did it take to build the wall?
While this was a reflection upon the people’s willingness to work.
Still when the enemies saw the completion of the wall Nehemiah 6:16
“…they perceived that this work was done by our _____________.”
There was a problem, Nehemiah prayed, but not only prayed, both he and the people worked.
Their success was so special that all knew that God had been involved in their success.
Prayer makes a difference.
God Bless you,
