What does it mean to believe in Jesus? The operative word here is "believe". This word encompasses the cognitive capacity of knowing what Jesus did for us such as being born, living a sinless life, dying for our sins, raising up the third day and ascending to heaven. But it also involves the active capacity to take head knowledge and transform it into a change in behavior. Our command is to believe; know and act. How do we act? We love and by loving we live via the new life that God gives. This new life is made possible by the Holy Spirit that resides in us and brings forth fruits of righteousness. Are you trusting God in your daily walk? This life is characterized by a life of obedience, active faith and the resulting fruit of the Spirit.

1 JOHN 3:23-24 “ And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”

John is encouraging us to walk in the light and live like Christ. IN Mathew 7:16 Jesus tells us that we will be known by our fruit. As believers we know it is impossible to bear good fruit if we are not walking in the light. The evidence of knowing God and fellowshipping with him is that we keep His commandments. A Simple, loving obedience is the natural result of Fellowship with God. Let’s continue to set our gaze on Jesus and walk each day in obedience. Remember we have a gracious Advocate in heaven. Lets share the Hope of glory and love has He first loved us!

1 JOHN 2: 3-6
3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

GOD IS LIGHT, IN HIM THERE IS NO DARKNESS

God himself Is light and light by definition has no darkness at all. Darkness is simply the absence of light. God is calling us to have fellowship with him, to be in the light and not to walk in darkness. How do we walk in the light you might ask, we do this by abiding in Christ. We know that we are not saved by works but through grace. We are forgiven in Christ’s death and resurrection. Since God is light, when we walk in the light we walk where He is. We are naturally together with Him in Fellowship. We are obedient to his commands; we don’t harbor sin or resist the conviction of the holy spirit. As we walk in the light we also enjoy the continual cleansing of Jesus.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[b] sin.

We have been studying the book of 1 John every Sunday morning at 10am with Pastor Emi Grigoruta. His study centers around these truths: that God is Light, thus as his children we cannot walk in darkness, that God is Love, thus we cannot hate our brother, and that God is Life, thus by believing in Jesus we can partake in eternal life.

At Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln declared that, “these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

1 John 3:16 tells us that “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren”. This Memorial Day we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We are thankful for their sacrifice and are utterly thankful for Christ paying the ultimate sacrifice so that we may have eternal life.
