Food Pantry Project:

Good Morning
Let me introduce you to the girls— we have 54 chickens… one or two of them are roosters. We also have 13 guinea fowl. The Giving Garden is embarking on a project to provide range-free eggs to meal sites and food pantries. We are also considering giving eggs to those who might like to give a donation to the effort.
A little about our birds—We chose a variety of chickens who are high yield producers. They will deliver 280–320 eggs per year, per chicken. Conservatively, that is 1500 dozen eggs a year. A few volunteers look after them daily, providing fresh water, scratch grains and layer pellets that supplements their foraging. They are put to roost every night within a secure enclosure and released each morning to explore the 2 acre fenced in paddock. It is a highlight of my day to let them out— so I thought I would share my experience.
Our Garden and our chickens are not about fresh vegetables and protein… it is about People. There is nothing more important than people, who are our neighbors—The two things with which people struggle who are food insecure is fresh produce, and protein. The Giving Garden is dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome these issues.
Enjoy the video— We have chosen to free range our birds with two mules. Mules are half donkey and half horse. They have a protective instinct that they get from their donkey side. The guinea fowl are “alert birds “who will warn the flock of predators. They are also very good at reducing ticks, flies and other undesirable insects. They will contribute to egg production, but they only lay about 85 eggs a year. Please consider helping us with this project..
