This was a providential calendar "quote of the day" that resonated with us throughout our morning reflections. The future we focus on in our youth is much different from the future we look toward in our elder years. Our relationship with a loving and provident God is vital as we endure the ebbs and flows of living in imperfect bodies in an imperfect world. It also empowers us to embrace the final leg of earthly journeys with faith, hope, and anticipation of a future in our eternal home with Christ. How does this scripture quote speak to you?

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and we join Nuns Against Gun Violence and others as we in honor of victims and survivors of gun violence.

Please join us as we continue to pray for the many lives lost to gun violence, survivors, loved ones, first responders, and traumatized communities. As Franciscans called to be instruments of God's Peace and care for all creation, we humbly ask you to also join us in continuing to contact our elected officials - local, state and federal- and urge them to work together, take a comprehensive look at the causes of gun violence, policies and proposed solutions, and act now to save lives.

"Lord Jesus, You gave your life for us. Your Sacred Heart is ablaze with love. Your hand extends towards me, and towards all, offering love, mercy, and healing. Sacred Heart of Jesus may your love transform me. Burn away my hesitation that I may become your love and radiate your mercy. Amen"

When contemplating the Sacred Heart as the source of justice and love, we connect Christ’s love for us with our love for others. As Pope Francis said in Dilexit Nos, “Our best response to the love of Christ’s heart is to love our brothers and sisters. There is no greater way for us to return love for love” (no. 167). As we meditate on the love Christ has for us, let us pray this Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for Love and Mercy.

Lord Jesus, You gave your life for us. Your Sacred Heart is ablaze with love. Your hand extends towards me, and towards all, offering love, mercy, and healing. Sacred Heart of Jesus may your love transform me. Burn away my hesitation that I may become your love and radiate your mercy. Amen.

Some as we approach National Gun Violence Awareness Day from a Michigan father who almost lost two daughters to two separate instances of gun violence only a year apart. Transformed by his family's experiences, he was called to serve on his parish’s peace and justice committee and educate Catholics on gun violence. His words challenge us to think about how each of us - as members of the Church - can be part of the solution to gun violence. How, like St. Francis, are we called to preach and live the gospel? (full story linked in comments)

As a reminder, this Friday, June 5 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and we join the many who will in support of victims, survivors and all affected by gun violence, as well as ongoing efforts to end gun violence.
