It is a blessing to hear our Sisters tell their own stories. Today's is from 2019 when Sister Elise Mora was interviewed by All-Abilities Media for Standup Sisters: Green Habits that highlighted Sisters caring for creation. In a little over 5 minutes, Sister Elise tells the short version of how she came to care for all God's creatures, her calling to religious life in a Franciscan Community, and how she incorporated care for creation in her ministry.

This week, we are blessed to celebrate 88 years since our first five pioneer Sisters arrived in Brazil. Today’s photos commemorate the journey of Sisters M. Julia Adomaitis, M. Caroline Straiter, M. Marcelline Bernott, M. Evangelista Calvin, and M. Norberta Svirskas. Our Sisters departed via boat from New Youk City on August 13, 1938 and arrived in Rio de Janeiro on August 27, 1938. Missioned to serve Vila Zelina, São Paulo where many Lithuanian immigrants had settled, our Sisters served St. Joseph Parish and soon established a school.

From the seeds sown by our pioneer Sisters, a beautiful tradition of Franciscan education, hospitality, and care has grown and thrived in Brazil. Our Schools - São Miguel Arcanjo (St. Michael the Archangel), Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Carmel), Pio XII (Pius XII), Escolinha (the Little School), and São Francisco de Assis (St. Francis of Assis) have educated thousands of Brazilian youth and instilled our Franciscan values in multiple generations. Our Sisters serve in parishes, healthcare, and pastoral ministries addressing the unique needs of the communities and people in both urban and rural missions. Growing in Providence, São Paulo, Brazil, became home to our Generalate in September 2017. Our Congregation elected our first Brazilian General Minister, Sister Rute Almeida Guimarães, in 2021 (She was re-elected for a second term last year.) Faithfully embracing the challenges of distance, language, and culture, ALL our Sisters remain united in our shared Franciscan charism and mission. Grateful to our Provident God, we go forward together as sowers of hope and peace. Paz e Bem!
