Community of Reconciliation Church

Community of Reconciliation Church We are an in*******al, inclusive Protestant church at Fifth and Bellefield in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. Join us for worship at 11am on Sundays!

Our congregation was founded in 1968 by a group of African American and European American churches who wanted to witness against segregation in our local churches and communities. Today we continue as an intentionally in*******al, inclusive church with membership in 4 Protestant denominations. Everyone is welcome here - no matter their age, race, ability, sexual orientation, or income. Join us as we celebrate 50 years of Christian ministry for peace and justice here in Pittsburgh!

During COR’s Sunday worship service this week, a video sermon featured our settled minister Michael Airgood leading us page by page through a book of fantastical collages he’d created on the theme of Luke 16:19-31, The Rich Man and Lazarus, the morning’s scripture reading. An original hymn, “Uncrossable Chasm,” performed by Micah Nagel and a rousing version of the folk song “Hi-Ho Jerum” performed by Ceinwen-King Smith carried through the scripture’s theme and added to the meaningful and joyful service.

Rev Michael Airgood shares a collage homage of Jesus' short story The Rich Man & Lazarus.

This week COR held our Sunday worship via Zoom since roads near our church building were closed for the City of Pittsburgh Great Race. Our settled minister Michael Airgood surprised us with a special treat: Rev. Bruce Swenson, who co-founded COR in 1968, and his wife Sondra Swenson – now Maryland residents -- delivered video greetings to the congregation before Rev. Bruce started our service with a morning prayer.

Rev Bruce and Sondra Swenson share in greetings and prayer with the Community of Reconciliation Church in Pittsburgh.

Rev. Michael Airgood has been named as settled minister by Community of Reconciliation Church.

Michael worked as a United Methodist Global Ministries Missionary in Ukraine for years before pastoring United Methodist churches in the Mon Valley for a decade. Michael continues to be in ministry with the Ukraine UMC and to fundraise and stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian People.

Michael’s loving family includes church organist mother Debbie, medical provider sister Rebecca, and nephews Hemi and Warn.

Michael’s education was diverse, including growing up in a rural school district in Kane, PA; traveling as an exchange student to Konakovo, Russia; studying Mission and Intercultural Studies at Toccoa Falls College in Georgia; completing the MDiv program at Methodist Theological School in Ohio; and even taking a few classes through the former Moscow United Methodist Seminary.

Michael was honored as a 2023 Allies for Health + Wellbeing Bright Young Person. Hobbies include writing, singing, and translating Ukrainian poetry.

Michael is excited to have joined Community of Reconciliation Church. The church congregation is delighted to have Michael as its 23rd settled minister and is looking forward to a wonderful ministry together!
