First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh

First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh First Presbyterian Church is a dynamic, transforming church, where all are welcome, lives are changed, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ is lived and proclaimed.

This church has been in the heart of the city since 1773. Over a hundred years ago when other downtown churches were selling their property and moving to the suburbs the leaders of the church couldn't imagine downtown Pittsburgh without First Presbyterian Church. For over two centuries this church has been in the heart of the city with the city in its heart. We have a Casavant organ and 13 priceless Tiffany stained glass windows.

This is our current building, facing Oliver Ave., before the addition was put on in 1956.
Also wanted to note that the building the Rev. Dr. Herron purchased at the County Sale was the Brick building, built around 1810.

In 1811, the bankrupt church called a new minister, Rev. Dr. Francis Herron. When the sheriff of Allegheny County put the church and its property up for sale, Herron attended the sale and bought it all in his name for $2,819. Perhaps the people of the city didn’t want to bid against the minister. Herron then sold a small portion of the property to the Pittsburgh Bank for $3,000. The debt was paid and the profit went to the church.🏷️💸💰

It's almost that time of the month again - our walk-in ministry will be back in action June 15-18th, serving up goodness to the downtown Pittsburgh community. We're indebted to our amazing volunteers who give selflessly each month. Parkhurst Dining and Chef Bill deserve a medal for their incredible support and tasty meals, God is good and so is the food!

In a time of discontinuous change, where any image you can imagine (and many beyond imagination) can be realistically created by AI, is there anything you would risk carving in stone? 🗿📰

Visitors from around the world who stop by to see First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh are struck by its breathtaking twin spires. In any city, churches usually have the most interesting architecture. Church buildings lift up neighborhoods by just being there. Even people with no religious faith are inspired. ✨

Visitors who look closer sometimes notice an interesting detail: Sunday worship times are carved in stone. One wrote, “When that building was built, the congregation imagined that people would flock to that place in the middle of the city forever; so they built it grandly. They may have imagined that the rhythms of church life would be so uncontested for time immemorial that they could risk carving the hours of Sunday worship prominently in stone in the church’s façade.”

Again, is there anything you would risk carving in stone? Visitors to First Presbyterian Church notice something else, a stone pulpit looking out over the sidewalk, with a great stained-glass window behind it. Visitors are left to wonder that maybe there really is a God, and that God might not be done with them yet.

If there is anything in life that doesn’t change, it just might be God’s word. That word isn’t just cooped up inside a great old stone church, but, as the pulpit suggests, it’s loose in the world.🙏🙌

By the turn of the 20th century, the city 🏙️had grown up around First Presbyterian Church. Steel had made it possible to skyscrapers, making property downtown quite valuable. But smoke 💨and grime from steel mills and industry made living downtown difficult, so residents had fled to the suburbs.
Churches found that they could sell their property, build a new church near their parishioners, and have money left over. The people of First Presbyterian Church could not imagine the city without its first church, so they decided to stay and build a much bigger and far more ornate church. ⛪️

The church was built without a capital campaign after the session gave permission to the minister, Maitland Alexander, to speak with industrialist and real estate developer Henry Oliver. Oliver gave the church an upfront payment of $150,000 and took out a lease on the edge of the property along Wood Street for which he agreed to pay the church $30,000 a year, a huge sum in 1903, for a term of 999 years. Oliver was allowed to build a commercial building on Wood Street.🏢
