I married the love from my childhood in his hospital room after learning from doctors that his time might be measured in months—just after we said "I do," a nurse whispered, "Before you leave... look under his mattress."

When Ben and I were eight, he was the boy who liked to carry my backpack when it got too heavy and would secretly transfer the biggest cookie to my tray.

By sixteen, our friends would say with a laugh that we’d end up together.

That turned out to be right.

Two months before our wedding, Ben collapsed while working.

His diagnosis turned our world upside down.

Aggressive cancer.

It had already advanced.

Nothing could halt it.

The doctors quietly let us know he probably had just a few months.

Facing the invitations already sent out, I saw only the reality that mattered—Ben.

We canceled every wedding plan.

No booked room.

No fancy blooms.

No dance.

In their place, the hospital chaplain married us in Ben’s hospital room.

I wore old jeans, a white shirt, and a party-store veil one of the nurses found.

Ben insisted on his goofy black bow tie for the occasion.

Paired with his pajamas, it looked ridiculous.

He smiled and said, "A groom has standards."

The whole room—nurses included—was in tears.

Ben squeezed my hand after the ceremony and told me, "Best day of my life."

It felt that way for me too.

A nurse cornered me alone in the corridor, glanced toward the room, and whispered, "Don’t let on that I said anything."

My heart leapt.

She leaned near. "Before you leave tonight..."

"Look under his mattress. He has a plan with his doctor."

"He hasn't realized I've noticed."

She slipped away.

I returned to Ben, masking my unease as I wondered about the secret beneath the bed.

When Ben shuffled off to the bathroom, I gently lifted the mattress edge.

What I saw caused my knees to give. ⬇️
