Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius

Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Seminary for men preparing for priestly ministry to the Byzantine Catholic Churches of North America. On-campus as well as online program for lay students.

As the Byzantine Catholic Seminary, we continue the mission mandate of our Lord Jesus Christ, “…teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…” (Matthew 28:20). As a Catholic community of formation, we discern and nurture the gift of vocation granted by the Holy Spirit to those men called to a life of ordained ministry. As a theological center of learning, we hand on the Tradition

of the Christian East for those men and women who seek to serve and enrich the life of the Church and world today. Founded by God’s grace in 1950, the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius is the official seminary of the Byzantine Catholic Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh, is open to all the North American Eastern Eparchies, and welcomes all those seeking the knowledge possessed by the Eastern ecclesial traditions. As a school of theology, we are Authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Accredited by the Association of Theological Schools.

It is with deep regret that we must announce that Dr. Paul Magocsi will be unable to join us this year.
Instead, we are looking forward to: The V. Rev. Stelyios Muksuris, MLitt-DTh, PhD presenting :

“Remember Me in Your Kingdom, O Lord” : Rethinking Liturgical Commemoration in the Byzantine Rite of Proskomide."

7 PM E.D.T. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

We are eager for you to join us!

Fr. Muksuris’ presentation will explore the liturgical commemoration of names in the holy prothesis from historical, theological, ecclesiological, and liturgiological perspectives. While the practice of commemoration in Orthodox Liturgy today typically excludes non-Orthodox Christians, Fr. Stel will challenge us to rethink the Church’s boundaries of grace and to envision the completed proskomide as the future kingdom of all believers in Christ. He proposes that remembering all Christians in the prothesis is consistent with the Church’s teaching on salvation, all the while stressing pastoral opportunities and initiatives to achieve a unity of love and solidarity among all peoples.

On Wednesday, March 25, Bishop Francois Beyrouti of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton joined the Seminary community and presided at Great Vespers and Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Annunciation. Bishop Francois also had the opportunity to visit his two Melkite seminarians and together they also participated in the official naming of the St. Lazarus Melkite Community in Steubenville on Lazarus Saturday, March 28, and Orthros and Liturgy for Palm Sunday, March 29. We are always grateful for Bishop Francois’s presence and support of our Seminary.

The Seminary’s spring Melkite Week was held from February 3-6 and was yet another great success. There were three presenters: Fr Christopher Emanuele, administrator of the Steubenville Melkite Mission, Fr Thomas Moses, chancellor of the Eparchy of Newton and an alumnus of our Seminary, class of 2017, and Fr Michael Coppenhagen. In addition to the many liturgical services celebrated in the Melkite Rite, there were seminars on a variety of topics: Spiritual Roles of Orthros & Vespers, Leadership Qualities, Organizational Structure of the Diocese of Newton, Discerning Marriage and Ordination, Family life as a layman and priest, and Ministerial Issues and Shepherding Souls. A Melkite Week is scheduled in both the fall and spring semesters, and greatly enriches the liturgical, academic, and spiritual aspects of formation for our entire Seminary community.

The Annual Pre-Cana Program was held at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary on Saturday, March 7, and it was another great success with 13 couples participating. Several seminarians also attended to fulfill some of the requirements of their pastoral formation. Presentations were given on topics such as communication and relationships, marriage as a journey, financing and budgeting, and the marriage ritual. The Seminary community continues to keep these couples in our prayers as they continue their journey to the Holy Mystery of Matrimony!
