Duquesne SVdP

Duquesne SVdP Each Sunday night, the Duquesne Chapter of St. Vincent de Paul travels into downtown Pittsburgh to give food, supplies, and friendship to the homeless.

Many people ask how Duquesne SVdP gets its resources. Amazingly, we run purely on monetary and supply donations. If you're interested in donating, you can leave any items (listed below) in the donation box found at the back of the Chapel! Here are some items we always need:
*Socks (Preferably long, gently used is acceptable)
*T-shirts, coats, and pants (Gently used, sizes L, XL, +)
*Underwear (Men

's)
*Hats, scarves, and gloves
*Deodorant (Men's)
*Tooth brushes and toothpaste
*Razors
*Bottles of water
*Granola bars, fruit snacks, crackers, and other snacks
*Toilet paper, wet wipes, bandaids, and other toiletries
*Shower soaps
*Grocery bags
*Drawstring bags and backpacks

Keep in mind that most of the people we meet downtown are men, but if you have women's clothing, children's clothing, shoes, or men's clothing other than what's listed above please visit the SVdP box in front of Brottier Hall. Any donations to this box will go to SVdP Pittsburgh to be sold in thrift stores or recycled. We are extremely grateful for all of your support, as are our friends downtown!

As we enter into the season of Advent and begin preparations for Christmas, here is a blog post reflecting on the joy of the simple things.

One Sunday night as we were heading back to campus, we walked past two men sitting on the curb. We stopped as we usually do and asked them if they needed anything. We didn’t have much left since we…

Check out this reflection about the real signicance behind getting to know those you serve, and why it’s not just some fluffy sentimentality. No names are disclosed in this piece, despite the title and subject matter.

One of the things I’ve always considered special about what we do on Sunday nights is the relationship building which occurs. When I first started coming I was amazed at the older students who coul…

A thought provoking piece reflecting on the last 7 phrases Jesus spoke on the cross, side by side things we have been told by those we serve.

“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” – “These rich people walking by, they’re blinded man, I’m tellin’ you.” How often do we find ourselves in the middle of blindness to our fell…

As my journey into service with the homeless began with the Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP) organization, I felt an intense need to reflect upon the values that have lead me to this point, and that co…

One of our member's takes on both what it means to see Christ in the poor, and the implications of doing so.

The words, “seeing Christ in the poor”, can easily become the noise you tune out, because you hear it so much and are never too sure of what exactly it means. But when asked, “why are we loo…

Here's a reflection about the level of intentionality we bring into our interactions.

On a typical Sunday night, our group will often meet an individual who more than anything, wants to talk. He wants to talk about the lottery, and ci******es and all the good music he knows. So, we …
