We are teachers, principals, librarians, pastoral associates, directors of religious education, administrators of personal care homes, social ministers, senior-citizen companions, nurses, liturgists, and diocesan directors of education and formation ... to name just a few of our ministries. Francis concluded a landmark year in 2013 celebrating the 100th Anniversary of their presence in the United

States. Following is a brief history from the congregation’s Chronicles. Shortly after the turn of the 20th Century, the increasing immigration of people from Europe to North America left American pastors pleading for help from the Church in Europe. The immigrants craved spiritual growth and help in adjusting to a new country and language. Their children needed religious education and schooling. It was for these reasons that in 1911 Mother M. Hyacinth Zahalka came from Bohemia to the United States in response to a request from an American bishop. After Mother Hyacinth’s death in 1912, Mother M. Xavier Furgott sent six sisters to Pittsburgh, Pa., to respond to the “needs of the time.” Despite many difficulties, these “Pioneer Sisters” began their ministry of education among people of Eastern European heritage here in America, with their work expanding to many places in the United States. The present Provincial House, Mount Assisi Convent, was completed in Pittsburgh in 1928. Here the Sisters opened an elementary school for boys and girls and a high school for girls. The community continued to flourish. In 1957, another Provincial House, Monocacy Manor, was established in Bethlehem, Pa., and the early 1960s saw the opening of St. Francis Academy for girls in Bethlehem, Pa., and in San Antonio, Texas. Besides the U.S., in subsequent years, our sisters ministered in the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Rome, South America, South Africa, South India and Central Asia. In 2007, the former Pittsburgh and Bethlehem provinces joined to become the United State Province. Following in the footsteps of St. Francis, the School Sisters of St. Francis continue to embrace the journey begun many years ago.

Last month, our Sisters at Mt. Assisi Place in Pittsburgh, Pa., enjoyed catching up with our old friends from Amazing Scholar Academy Preschool. In what has become a springtime tradition, the teachers — who also taught at our former Mount Assisi Academy Preschool — delivered small gifts to our Sisters on behalf of their students and families. They also raised funds to purchase a smart TV and mobile cart so the residents of Mt. Assisi Place, including our Sisters, can enjoy special programming throughout the building.

Sister Barbara Brown recently enjoyed a delicious Chinese dinner at the home of two of her former ESL students, Jinfeng and Jiang, a married couple with two adult sons. The food was beautifully presented and delicious, and the meal offered a great opportunity for Jinfeng and Jiang to practice their conversational English. “It was a wonderful experience,” says Sister Barbara, who continues to serve as an ESL tutor with ProJeCt of Easton, Pa.

Nature speaks to so many of our Sisters when they are on retreat or otherwise seeking quiet time to connect with God. Here, Sister Pat Marie Buranosky (formerly Sister Mark) enjoys the heavenly view from a favorite retreat destination in central Pennsylvania. Do you have a special place where you pray? This week, our Sisters in the U.S. Province and throughout our international congregation celebrated the 175th anniversary of the death of our foundress, Mother Frances Antonia Lampel. Together, we prayed a beautiful vespers service prepared for the occasion by our Sisters in Chile. During the service at Monocacy Manor in Bethlehem, Pa., the altar (shown here) was adorned with a candle representing the Sisters in each of our jurisdictions and missions worldwide.

Gracious God, on this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and their lives with Your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We ask this through your name.

When members of the St. Francis Academy Class of 1978 were in Bethlehem, Pa., earlier this month for a funeral, they made time to stop by Monocacy Manor to visit with their former teachers. Joy, love and gratitude filled the room as Sisters Rosaria Shina, Anita Kuchera, Xavier Bomberger, Marguerite Stewart and Regina Ann Rokosny (formerly Sister Borgia) reminisced with their former students ... proof that Kaydettes never forget.

Sister Carol Ann Papp and her colleagues at Northside Catholic Assumption Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., were treated to a week of special activities in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8) earlier this month. Among the highlights ... each faculty member received a beautiful succulent plant from the PTA ... a trained therapy dog named Murphy visited with students to bring a calming atmosphere to the end of the school year ... and, finally, students created PEACE signs in art class to celebrate the year of St. Francis.

There is but one and only one whose love will fail you never. One who lives from sun to sun with constant fond endeavor. There is but one and only one, on earth there is no other. In heaven a noble work was done when God gave us a Mother. (Irish Blessing | Author Unknown)
