Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh

Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh We are a family of churches rooted in the ancient church, grounded in the Bible, and passionate about Jesus and his good news.

We seek to plant, support, and renew Anglican churches that embody the gospel of Jesus Christ in our communities.

“To gather together in prayer for the city is a unique thing,” Rev. Cameron said. “I believe very strongly in prayer. The thought of us gathering together as one and asking God to bless our city is really powerful and amazing.”

In a world that feels increasingly divisive and negative, Deacon Eric Schorr said he has seen his fellow Christians draw closer to Jesus Christ in recent years.

A picture of that was evident Saturday morning, as a sizable crowd gathered on Mount Washington to watch holy water rain down on the city a day before Easter.

The celebration marked the 35th annual Easter blessing of the city of Pittsburgh, led by 12 Christian leaders of various denominations and backgrounds.

“It’s a great show of Christian unity, and that’s what it’s really all about,” said Deacon Schorr, who serves at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Mt. Lebanon. “We are a Christian country, and even though we can have our differences among the denominations, it’s good to see that we all have something in common.”

"As you look at the individual pieces, they are fascinating and compelling in and of themselves but then when you step back, you understand the larger picture. And that’s really what Holy Week is for us—individual pieces that come together to help us understand the larger picture of the magnificent and eternal and unspeakable work of salvation that comes to us in Christ Jesus, the Son of the living God."

On this, the weightiest weekend of the Christian year, we give thanks for all our clergy leading their congregations through these sacred days.

We invite you to pray with us from the daily office (BCP 2019):
Almighty and everlasting God, who alone works great marvels: Send down upon our clergy and the congregations committed to their charge the life-giving Spirit of your grace, shower them with the continual dew of your blessing, and ignite in them a zealous love of your Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If you'd like to support our clergy and their families beyond donating generously to your local church, consider giving through the diocese, which helps provide continuing education, financial coaching and crisis relief, family counseling, sabbatical grants, and more. https://www.adpgh.org/donate/

Part 6. "'We have been going to Bible studies for 30 years, but we have never served the poor...' That’s to miss the point of what Christian discipleship is. Jesus came and gave his life for us. That’s the picture of salvation."

In his Lenten series on making disciples, Bishop Alex has covered Scripture, theology, spiritual habits, and mercy. In this final episode, he explores what it means to turn outward: toward others, toward sacrifice, and toward the full picture of what Jesus modeled for us.

Part 5. "Sometimes 'living forgiveness and mercy' is actually having the humility to accept mercy, to understand that I am desperately in need of forgiveness, that I was the bad guy, not the good guy."

In this fifth week of our Lenten series on discipleship, Bishop Alex explores the theme of "living forgiveness, mercy, and grace," not just intellectually, but in our day-to-day lives.

Part 4. "Discipleship means helping and encouraging people, and holding them accountable, to developing habits in their Christian lives. Good habits don't save us, they don't fix us, they don't make us holy, but those habits are there to orient us—as much as it is within us—towards God rather than towards something else."

In this fourth video of Bishop Alex's Lenten series on discipleship, he explores how we can disciple others toward disciplines that can grow into habits that point us deeper into our faith.

Part 3. "As I continue to think through what it means to make disciples... another central part of it is teaching people what we believe as Christians. Theologically, what are our convictions?"

Continuing in his Lenten study of what is included in making disciples, Bishop Alex's topic this week is theology. He points us toward the Scriptures, the creeds, and other resources, and explains why it's important to move beyond a basic familiarity with these resources to understanding why we believe what we do and the implications those beliefs have for our lives.

"As a parent, having raised four children myself, I spend a lot of time thinking about what I did wrong, what I could’ve done better, how I missed it, and 'I wish I had...' As I observed all of these kids, it made me stop and think that Christian parents are doing something right."

Taking a brief break from his Lenten series on discipleship, Bishop Alex reflects on our first diocesan Youth Weekend. In case you missed it, we took over a hundred youth and volunteer leaders to Seneca Hills Bible Camp on March 13-15, to spend time in fellowship, worship, and learning, and to build relationships.

We're catching up after our first diocesan Youth Weekend! We are so grateful to our team of volunteer organizers and leaders, to all the students who participated and grew in their faith, to the parents who packed and sent them, to those who prayed around the clock from home, and to everyone else who had a part in making this event happen.

Here are just a few snapshots of the fun we had! Please continue to pray for God's continued and lasting transformation in the hearts of these teens.
