Sun’s Day

On this third day of Yule we call out to the Sun,
Newly reborn with the dawn of the day.
Though darkness still reigns in our northern hemisphere,
We rejoice in the knowledge that nights now grow shorter
And delight in daylight's dance upon the snow-covered land.
Evergreen trees bedecked with bulbs and twinkling memories remind us of life's resilience
While candles flicker and Yule logs glow to strengthen our striving star.
Reborn Sun, we honor you!

Winter Solstice Night

On this second night of Yule we call out in darkness.
As the Sun stops descending in the southern sky
And the Earth turns its northern face away from its rays,
We stand in the silent stillness of the Winter Solstice
Taking time away from the holiday bustle to contemplate
The miracle of our planet’s life-sustaining tilt
And the majesty of the changing seasons.
Winter Solstice Night, we honor you.

Mothers’ Night

On this first night of Yule we call to the Mothers;
Those who bore, loved, and raised us and all those who came before;
Those women of our Ancestral lines who watch over us still;
The Three Sister Rivers who bring life to this land we call “home;”
And the Three Sisters of Fate who weave the threads of our lives into our family tapestry.
At the Yuletide we carry on the sacred and secular traditions you handed down,
Bringing peace, warmth, and cheer into this darkest time of year.
Great Mothers: We honor you!

This is a prayer that I wrote and said on Trans Day of Remembrance,
November 20, 2024
Rev. Diane "Emerald" Bronowicz Egelhoff

She puts on her dress and smiles in the mirror at the woman she has always known herself to be.

He shaves his face, gingerly scraping the hairs whose growth
have made him feel like himself.

They spy “they/them” in their email
signature and still marvel at the elation they feel
in expressing who they really are.

On this solemn day
as I remember the trans lives
taken by hatred, cruelty and fear
sown by those who lust for power,
I must also remember the lives that they lived--
bright and shining lives of gender euphoria, trans joy, and unbridled authenticity.

I love and honor those we have lost.
I love and honor my trans siblings who live as and strive to become their truest selves.
I pledge to do all that I can
so that there are no new names
to be spoken next year except in greeting, acceptance, and respect.

So be it.

A Prayer for the Turning Year
On this twelfth night of Yule we honor the Turning Year.
We first look back at the year that was, reflecting on lessons learned and goals achieved;
On sorrows endured, joys celebrated, and the mundane moments of our day-to-day lives.
We remember those we have lost and give thanks for those we have welcomed into our worlds.
At last we stand upon the wide-open threshold and can feel the year’s turning--
Kisses and cacophony; special foods eaten and traditions kept to drive away evil at this liminal time.
We turn our faces to the year that is, open to the possibilities of a new beginning.
The Turning Year, we honor you!

Heroes and Chosen Ancestors

On this eleventh night of Yule, we honor our Heroes and Chosen Ancestors.
Ancestors of this land whose example teaches us to live in harmony with nature;
Artists and writers who created works that speak to our souls and open our minds;
Scientists and inventors whose understandings and breakthroughs improve our daily lives.
You who worshiped our gods before us, whose ways enkindle our ways;
You who worked tirelessly to empower the powerless and risked and gave your lives to create a more equal society for all;
And all of our personal heroes who have nurtured us, guided us, and inspired us to follow our dreams.
Heroes and Chosen Ancestors, we honor you!

Earth Mother

On this tenth night of Yule we honor the Earth Mother,
You who birth and sustain all life and hold us in our final rest.
From cultivated fields to the wildest woods, majestic mountains, and seemingly barren beaches
Life endures, even when slumbering beneath the silent snows
While you turn your face away from the Sun.
We embrace the stillness of these continuing long nights
And honor the hope embodied by the greenery of this festive season.
Earth Mother we honor you!

On this ninth night of Yule
we honor our
Patron and Household Deities.
You who shine closest to our hearts and our hearths through the relationships we have
built together.
To you we turn in our
greatest need,
And you guide us with wisdom, knowledge, and strength.
We entreat your presence in our happiest moments,
And you shower us with blessings of enchantment and joy.
Your companionship makes any shelter a home, a fit place for love to blossom and guests to gather.
Patron and Household Deities,
we honor you!

House Spirits
On this eighth night of Yule we honor our House Spirits
You who look after our home and our land.
When pleased, you bestow good luck, protection and bounteous blessings.
When displeased, you make mischief, bringing upheaval and chaos into our lives.
Mindful of your dual nature, we seek to stay in your good graces,
Remembering your offerings and keeping our home tidy and clean
That we may all dwell here together in harmony, humor, and peace.
House Spirits, we honor you!

A Prayer for Forefathers’ Night
On this seventh night of Yule we honor our Forefathers.
Those who sired, protected, and provided for us and all those who came before.
Those men of our Ancestral lines whose wisdom and knowledge shapes our lives;
The Ancestors of the land who lived, loved, and made their home here long before our
Forefathers came;
And the Spirit of the Winter Wanderer who brings magic and joy to children of all ages.
At the Yuletide we honor your perseverance, innovation, and strength
As we find our way through the darkest time of the year.
Forefathers: We honor you!
