Start your late-spring-cleaning engines - we are now accepting donations for the annual Used Book Sale, set for Aug. 14-23. From kids’ books to cookbooks, Bibles to beach reads, your donations make this one of the region’s most anticipated used book sales. Since its inception in 2006, the Used Book Sale has raised nearly $70,000 for local educational and literacy organizations.

In addition to books we will accept donations of CDs, DVDs, video/audio tapes and vinyl records. (Please no encyclopedias, magazines or textbooks.) Big cleanout underway? We will be glad to arrange for help transporting heavy items. Thank you for supporting the Used Book Sale and its mission!

Take Dad on a journey through a shocking chapter of western Pennsylvania history with ”The Whiskey Rebellion: A Distilled History of an American Crisis” by Robert Morris University professor Brady J. Crytzer. Locals’ vigorous disagreement with Alexander Hamilton’s tax on whiskey still stands as the second largest domestic rebellion in American History, only outdone by the Confederate States of America in 1861.

Graduations and celebrations are two sure signs of spring. Your card from the Bookstore will stand out from the crowd: carefully curated from small producers, they’re beautiful, reasonably priced and ecologically sound.

So much of our book selection is giftable as well. “Seven Sacred Pauses: Living Mindfully Through The Hours of the Day” by Macrina Wiederkehr invites readers to pray by consciously pausing at seven moments of each day, making their daily lives a more sacred pilgrimage. She uses scripture, poetry, reflections, and personal stories from an array of spiritual teachers, all based in the Benedictine tradition of deep listening to the word of God and hospitality to all forms of life.

Last-minute Mother’s Day shoppers, we see you and we are here for you at the Bookstore. Stop by for a card from our lovely selection, a gift certificate, or a book that’s beyond the ordinary for Mom or another woman who’s made a difference in your life.

Matthew J. Milliner’s “Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon” delves into the image of Mary known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Byzantine image that has shrines on nearly every continent and retains its power to this day, even appearing during the 2012 Olympics. It’s “an absorbing and compelling story unfolded by an immensely gifted art historian and storyteller,” said Duke Divinity School professor Thomas Pfau.

Our selection of jewelry is very suitable for a young person, and available in a wide price range. Many of our books are also perfect for gift giving, including some from our Fred Rogers collection. “Mr. Rogers, Young Friend and Neighbor” is from the Childhood of Famous Americans series. And the According to Mister Rogers series offers Fred’s wisdom in a daily affirmation-type format.

Make sure to get your own copy of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: Children, Television & Fred Rogers,” a collection of essays exploring Rogers’ impact. We have copies signed by last week’s speaker, Rev. Paula Lawrence-Wehmiller, who contributed a chapter, and Mark Collins, one of the editors. “Fred Rogers is a national treasure and the writers of these essays go a long way toward explaining why,” said Joan Ganz Cooney of Children’s Television Workshop.

What an uplifting and enlightening time it’s been over the past few months, learning more about the people depicted in our new stained glass windows. Delve deeper into the Pittsburgher immortalized there, Fred Rogers, with several volumes available in the Bookstore. In “Peaceful Neighbor: Discovering the Countercultural Mister Rogers” author Michael G. Long calls Rogers “one of the most radical pacifists of contemporary history … he fervently believed in a God who accepts us as we are and who desires a world marked by peace and wholeness.”

While perusing the Rogers collection, be sure also to take a look at our Lenten Devotional Collection, filled with resources for enriching your Lenten prayer life. Our beautiful Easter greeting cards are in stock as well.

Experience the story of Holy Week as never before through Rhidian Brook’s “Notes on an Execution.” Brook tells the story through a series of eyewitness accounts, rooted in both the Bible and historical insight, and includes questions for personal meditation or group discussion. It’s “a vivid retelling that brings fresh life to a familiar story,” said one reviewer.

There’s still time to get a signed copy of the Rev. Dr. Mark Bozzuti-Jones’ book “Face to the Rising Sun: Reflections on Spirituals and Justice,” in which he examines spirituals - African-American songs of faith, resilience, courage and love that have been passed down through the centuries. And as we approach the final celebration of our new stained glass windows, don’t forget the awesome commemorative coloring book is still available for just $10, with all proceeds going to Calvary Camp.
