Still pondering a Father’s Day gift? You can’t go wrong with a Bookstore gift certificate; they’re available in any denomination and open the door to a world of spiritual treasures.

The annual Used Book Sale is set for Aug. 14-23, and we are eagerly awaiting your donations. All types of books, CDs, DVDs, tapes and vinyl records are welcome (please no encyclopedias, magazines or textbooks). We will be glad to arrange for help transporting heavy items.

Your volunteer help is also needed before, during and after the sale. Our first need is for people who are available to pack books on either Wednesday or Saturday mornings. Please let Cindy Pepples know if you can help in any aspect of the sale at [email protected] or 412-298-8274

Summer reading season has officially arrived! Take a thought-provoking, Pulitzer Prize-winning volume to the lounge chair: Jill Lepore’s “We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution,” now available at the Bookstore.

Lepore argues that the nation’s founders never intended that the Constitution be preserved “like a butterfly under glass” but expected it to be fine-tuned by future generations - yet it has not been meaningfully amended since 1971. Lepore both explains why and points the way to a different future in this remarkable book.

Start your late-spring-cleaning engines - we are now accepting donations for the annual Used Book Sale, set for Aug. 14-23. From kids’ books to cookbooks, Bibles to beach reads, your donations make this one of the region’s most anticipated used book sales. Since its inception in 2006, the Used Book Sale has raised nearly $70,000 for local educational and literacy organizations.

In addition to books we will accept donations of CDs, DVDs, video/audio tapes and vinyl records. (Please no encyclopedias, magazines or textbooks.) Big cleanout underway? We will be glad to arrange for help transporting heavy items. Thank you for supporting the Used Book Sale and its mission!

Matthew J. Milliner’s “Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon” delves into the image of Mary known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Byzantine image that has shrines on nearly every continent and retains its power to this day, even appearing during the 2012 Olympics. It’s “an absorbing and compelling story unfolded by an immensely gifted art historian and storyteller,” said Duke Divinity School professor Thomas Pfau.

Black and gold short sleeve shirts work for baseball season, long sleeve shirts for the NHL playoffs. These also make a great gift for anyone new to, or departing, our region. Our selection of jewelry is very suitable for a young person, and available in a wide price range. Many of our books are also perfect for gift giving, including some from our Fred Rogers collection. “Mr. Rogers, Young Friend and Neighbor” is from the Childhood of Famous Americans series. And the According to Mister Rogers series offers Fred’s wisdom in a daily affirmation-type format.

Make sure to get your own copy of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: Children, Television & Fred Rogers,” a collection of essays exploring Rogers’ impact. We have copies signed by last week’s speaker, Rev. Paula Lawrence-Wehmiller, who contributed a chapter, and Mark Collins, one of the editors. “Fred Rogers is a national treasure and the writers of these essays go a long way toward explaining why,” said Joan Ganz Cooney of Children’s Television Workshop.
