Hubby Tom's 4.26.26 Sermon Summary
Priorities are the things which mean the most to us. As life goes on we appraise and readjust our priorities, and those decisions affect our lives and the lives of those around us. The Book of Haggai, a short book in the Bible, illustrates this.
The Jewish people had been released from seventy years of exile to go back to Israel. A remnant of fifty thousand returned and started to rebuild the temple. The foundation was laid, then opposition came, and the people turned away from the task of God and went to build their own nice houses.
They said it wasn’t time. It wasn’t time for sixteen years. During that time, harvests were short, money was lost, and they were never fulfilled. God said, “Give careful thought to your ways”. Consider your life. How is it going based on your priorities? You may intend to do something good for the Lord, but you never get around to it. Good intentions will not get you anywhere.
When times are hard and we just can’t seem to get ahead, it’s our instinct to blame others for our troubles. When we think we are doing something good, but things don’t turn out well, we blame Satan for opposing us. However, we need to give careful thought and understand that it may be God allowing trouble to bring us back into alignment with Him.
God told the Jewish people He caused the drought and the harvests to fall short. He was guiding them back to the right priorities. They weren’t harvesting the right areas of life. They weren’t satisfied because they failed to fulfill their spiritual hunger and thirst. They felt loss because they did not first invest in the Kingdom of God.
We desire many things. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”. Give careful thought to your ways. Put priorities in the proper order. And then, watch what God will do.
