New Salem Baptist Church Welcome to New Salem Church,

How To Become A Christian

Do you have a sense that something is missing in your life, a void that you can't explain or fill? At New Salem, we believe that the purpose of the Bible is to communicate God’s desire for us to know him personally. We believe that there is only one way for us to be made right with God and that is through Jesus Christ’s death on the cross as payment for our sins. Being a

Christian means that you have embraced what the Bible says about God, mankind, and salvation. Consider the following Biblical truths:

GOD IS SOVEREIGN CREATOR
In this contemporary world, Many believe that man is the product of evolution. However, the Bible says we were created by a personal God to love, serve, and enjoy endless fellowship with Him. The New Testament reveals that it was Jesus Himself who created everything (John 1:3 ; Colossians 1:16). Therefore, He also owns and rules everything (Psalm 103:19). That means He has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegiance, obedience, and worship. GOD IS HOLY
God is absolutely and perfectly holy (Isaiah 6:3), therefore He cannot commit or approve of evil (James 1:13). God requires holiness of us as well. 1 Peter 1:16 says, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." MANKIND IS SINFUL
According to Scripture, everyone is guilty of sin: "There is no man who does not sin" (1 Kings 8:46). That doesn't mean we are incapable of performing acts of human kindness. But we're utterly incapable of
understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own (Romans 3:10-12). SIN DEMANDS A PENALTY
God's holiness and justice demand that all sin be punished by death (Ezekiel 18:4. That's why simply changing our patterns of behavior can't solve our sin problem or eliminate its consequences. JESUS IS LORD AND SAVIOR
As Creator of all, and Ruler over all, Jesus Christ has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegience, obedience, and worship. Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised from the dead, you shall be saved." Even though God's justice demanded death for sin, His love has provided a Savior who paid the penalty and died for sinners (1 Peter 3:18). Christ's death satisfied the demands of God's justice and Christ's perfect life satisfied the demands of God's holiness (2 Corinthians 5:21), thereby enabling Him to forgive and save those who place their faith in Him (Romans 3:26). THE CHARACTER OF SAVING FAITH
True faith is always accompaied by repentance from sin. Repentance is agreeing with God that you are sinful, confessing your sins to Him, and making a conscious choice to turn from sin (Luke 13:3, 5; 1 Thessalonians 1:9) and pursue Christ (Matthew 11: 28-30; John 17:3) and obedience to Him (1 John 2:3. It isn't enough to believe certain facts about Christ. Even Satan and his demons believe in the true God (James 2:19), but they don't love and obey Him. True saving faith always responds in obedience (Ephesians 2:10). Salvation is available only through God’s free grace, not as a result of our human effort. We can access God’s grace through faith alone. God saves you by His grace when you believe. You can’t take credit for it; its is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. So you realized that you want to be saved, now what? Start by praying this prayer:

Dear Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself. I ask you to forgive me. I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. Thank you for making a way for me to spend all eternity with you. If you have questions about what it means to become a follower of Jesus Christ we would love to talk to you! Please see Pastor Chris or contact the church.

2024 Christmas Devotional

Incarnation is a word that describes the two natures of Christ. The titles ‘Son of God’ and ‘Son of Man’ are used to describe Jesus’s dual nature as both fully human and fully divine.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Beginning during WWII and continuing until 1976, Paul Harvey produced a radio program called “The Rest of the Story”. For many years after 1976, these stories were replayed often on the radio. They consisted of obscure facts and heartwarming stories about ordinary people on an assortment of subjects.

One Christmas he told a modern parable on the significance of Jesus’s birth. It went something like this:

There was once a man, a kind and generous man, honest and upright in his dealings with others, a man who was admired for the way he treated his family and lived his life. He was a good man.

He just didn’t believe in all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas. It just didn’t make sense to him and he was too honest to pretend otherwise.

He couldn’t swallow the Jesus story about God coming to earth as a man.

He rarely attended church but often went on Christmas Eve. This year he told his wife, “I’m truly sorry. I’m just not going to church with you and the children this Christmas Eve. I’d feel like a
hypocrite. I’d rather stay home, but I’ll wait up for you.”

So he stayed home and they went to the midnight service.

Soon after the family drove away, snow began to fall and he went to the window to watch the flurries as they got heavier and heavier. Then he went back to his fireside chair and began to read.

Minutes later, he was startled by a sound. Then another. Then another. Something was hitting the window. When he went to the front door to investigate, he found a flock of birds huddled there
miserably in the freezing cold and snow.

They had been caught in the storm and in a desperate search for shelter they had tried to fly into his large window. Well, he couldn’t let those poor creatures stay there and freeze. He realized the
barn would provide a warm shelter and all he would have to do is direct the birds into it.

He quickly put on a coat and walked through the deepening snow. He opened the barn doors and turned on a light so the birds could come in – but they didn’t come. So he figured to entice them
in. He went back to the house and got some breadcrumbs and sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail toward the lighted doorway of the barn. But to his disappointment, the birds
ignored the breadcrumbs. They continued to hop around helplessly in the snow.

He tried to shoo them in by walking around and waving his arms but instead they scattered in every direction -- except into the warm, lighted safety of the barn. Poor lost creatures. They
needed saving.

That’s when he realized they were afraid of him. He was a strange, terrifying creature. If only there was some way he could get them to trust him -- to know he wasn’t trying to hurt them and confuse them.

He thought, “If only I could be a bird for right now and be with them and speak their language. Then I could show them the way to safety. But I would have to be one of them, wouldn’t I? So then
they could see and understand.

At that moment, the church bells began to ring sounding that it was midnight. The sound reached his ears and he felt the glad tidings of Christmas and sank to his knees in the snow.

Mr. Harvey’s story ends here. The listening audience was left to assume what had happened. Those who know Christ know ‘the rest of the story’.

The man fell to his knees because of conviction. He realized that Just like the freezing birds had no hope without being rescued, he also had no hope without being rescued. Salvation for him was
available – it was the gift that God sent – in his great mercy – to save him and lead him to safety. The coming of God as a man was the celebration of Christmas he had never believed in
before, but now he knew it was all true. Now it made sense – the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Jesus, the personification of God, became a man and walked among humanity.

Luke 19:10 He came to seek and to save those who were lost. We could never find our way without Him.

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned to our own way – every one – and the
Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Our sin requires rescue.

The focus at Christmas is about a baby. But the ‘rest of the story’ is that little baby Jesus is our Savior. He is the Son of Man and the Son of God who bore the punishment for our sins. The greatest gift humanity has ever known through the almost secret, obscure birth of Jesus is the story of how countless lives have been changed by God’s mercy and grace through the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus.

This Christmas as we celebrate His birth, let us also celebrate the whole gospel of Christ. And now you have…the rest of the story.
