For : On June 19, 1865, two months after the Confederacy surrendered and more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops finally arrived in Texas, the westernmost Confederate state, and spread the word there that freedom was the law of the land.

About 70 years later, workers from the Federal Writers' Project arm of the Works Progress Administration started traveling around the U.S. collecting the stories of elderly Americans who still had firsthand accounts of being enslaved. Many of the people who were interviewed were also photographed. The Library has preserved these stories and images.

This photo is of Betty Simmons, who said she was more than 100 years old when she was interviewed in 1937 in Beaumont, Texas. She said she was married during slave times, and widowed, but was very happy that freedom came when it did because her enslavers were preparing to put her 3-year-old child to work in the fields.

This Sunday is Pentecostโ€”often called the โ€œbirthday of the Church.โ€

A crowd gathers in Jerusalem from many nations, speaking many languages and carrying many histories. And in that moment, the Holy Spirit moves: the good news of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, and it is heardโ€”clearly, personally, unmistakably.

What is God doing in this moment, by the power of the Holy Spirit?

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Pentecost together. Weโ€™ve saved a seat for youโ€”no matter where you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.

The disciples are in an in-between momentโ€”between the joy of Christโ€™s resurrection and what they cannot yet see. They are still asking questions, still trying to understand what comes next.

And if weโ€™re honest, so are we.

But in Acts 1, something unexpected happens: Jesus is no longer with them in the way they are used to. And they are left looking upward, unsure of what to do next.

This Sunday we step into that moment with themโ€”where we are still asking questions, still learning to trust, and still discovering that Christ is not absent, but present in ways we might not expect.

If you find yourself in a season of questions, uncertainty, or waitingโ€”you are not alone in it.

Join us on Sundays at 10:00 AM.
Come as you are, wherever you are on your faith journey. All are welcome here.
