By now you know bees collect pollen. These eight didn't get the memo.

One harvests oil instead. One builds a tiny fortress out of pebbles and tree resin. One is smaller than a grain of rice. One works blueberries for three weeks a year and nothing else. One is a flying emerald that lives in rotting logs. And one, out West, is quietly disappearing.

The tiny dull bee crawling on your arm in July is a sweat bee — that's the salt-seeking habit the whole family is named for, and it almost never stings. The pinhead-sized speck on a desert wildflower is a fairy bee, among the smallest bees alive and far too small to sting at all. The fuzzy bumblebee with the white rear end west of the Rockies is a western bumblebee, and there are a fraction as many as there were twenty years ago.

Four thousand species, and barely two dozen have names you'd know. Keep looking — the strange ones are the best.

"On Friday, our congregation at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church signed a Land Donation agreement to transfer a property next to the church building to Indigenous Protector Movement (IPM). Many neighbors and friends joined us to witness and celebrate. The journey to this day has been a journey of being church together and being neighbors together. Through all of it, the unwavering work of the Holy Spirit has been present and persistent, urging us on."
