Dear Dhamma friends,

Greetings from Mahapajapati Monastery Foundation! We would like to share some photos from our wonderful visit with Venerable Bhante Walpola Piyananda, Bhikkhuni Bhaddacachchana, Bhikkhuni Souvanna, Bhikkhuni Susila, and friends, who came to see Bhikkhuni Ayya Gunasari yesterday with early birthday wishes! We welcome Bhikkhuni Bhaddacachchana from Sri Lanka!

This full moon day is also auspicious because The Buddha established the Bhikkhuni order on this day with Bhikkhuni Mahapajapati, the first Bhikkhuni and after whom Ayya Gunasari named our monastery.

May all beings be well, happy, and peaceful!

We have received news from Ayya Tathālokā that Ayyā Gunasārī's Senior Bhikkhu Preceptor (for her Sāmanerī Pabbajjā), Most Venerable Rajakeeya Pandith Weihene Pannaloka Maha Thero (aka "Bhante Paññāloka"), has passed away sometime in March 2024 and funeral service was held on March 17th 2024.

"Unforeseen and unknown
is the extent of this mortal life—
hard and short
and bound to pain.

There is no way that
those born will not die.
On reaching old age death follows:
such is the nature of living creatures.

As ripe fruit
are always in danger of falling,
so mortals once born
are always in danger of death.

As clay pots
made by a potter
all end up being broken,
so is the life of mortals.

Young and old,
foolish and wise—
all go under the sway of death;
all are destined to die.

When those overcome by death
leave this world for the next,
a father cannot protect his son,
nor relatives their kin.

See how, while relatives look on,
wailing profusely,
mortals are led away one by one,
like a cow to the slaughter.

And so the world is stricken
by old age and by death.
That is why the wise do not grieve,
for they understand the way of the world.

For one whose path you do not know—
not whence they came nor where they went—
you lament in vain,
seeing neither end.

If a bewildered person,
lamenting and self-harming,
could extract any good from that,
then those who see clearly would do the same.

For not by weeping and wailing
will you find peace of heart.
It just gives rise to more suffering,
and distresses your body.

Growing thin and pale,
you hurt yourself.
It does nothing to help the dead:
your lamentation is in vain.

Unless a person gives up grief,
they fall into suffering all the more.
Bewailing those whose time has come,
you fall under the sway of grief.

See, too, other folk departing
to fare after their deeds;
fallen under the sway of death,
beings flounder while still here.

For whatever you imagine it is,
it turns out to be something else.
Such is separation:
see the way of the world!

Even if a human lives
a hundred years or more,
they are parted from their family circle,
they leave this life behind.

Therefore, having learned from the Perfected One,
dispel lamentation.
Seeing the dead and departed, think:
“I cannot escape this.”

As one would extinguish
a blazing refuge with water,
so too a sage—a wise,
astute, and skilled person—
would swiftly blow away grief that comes up,
like the wind a tuft of cotton.

One who seeks their own happiness
would pluck out the dart from themselves—
the wailing and moaning,
and sadness inside.

With dart plucked out, unattached,
having found peace of mind,
overcoming all sorrow,
one is sorrowless and extinguished."

Dear Dhamma Friends,

The Board of Mahapajapati Foundation would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has supported the monastery and Bhikkhuni Sangha. We would like to say 'thank you' to Ayya Nanadipa for her strong leadership in 2023. Ayya Nanadipa's legacy will always be remembered. We would like to wish her continued success along the path of Dhamma.

Board members gathered recently to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to the Mahapajapati Bhikhunni Sangha. Ayya Gunasari is in good health and continues to reside at the monastery. We'd like to also thank Ayya Gunasari's family and wonderful care team for their support throughout this transition period.

We will be welcoming a prospective Abbess for Mahapajapati Monastery at the end of April/beginning of May 2024. The Board will continue to update all Dhamma friends and supporters throughout this process.

At this time, please contact [email protected] for any questions or if you'd like to schedule a visit.

Thank you,

Dear Dhamma friends,

Greeting and wishing you all the best from Mahāpajāpatī Foundation.

Mahāpajāpatī Bhikkhunī Sangha is pleased to inform you about the upcoming Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony which will be held on November 18, 2023. As you may notice, the end of the rainy retreat, Buddhist vassāvasa, is coming soon / is completed.

At the end of vassāvasa, lay devotees usually offer Kathina Robes to the Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunīs who have been pursuing inner peace and final liberation from the ceaseless round of rebirths and deaths.

Ananda & Asoka family, Sri Lankan lay devotees also would like to offer Kathina robes to the Mahāpajāpatī pati Bhikkhunī Sangha. So, we'd like to cordially invite you to the event for which the agenda is attached herewith.

More importantly, Mahāpajāpatī Bhikkhunī Sangha is delighted to inform you about our honourable guest, Ven. Viditadhamma, a famous preacher who will jointly lead the Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony. She will kindly give a Dhamma talk at the ceremony. Let's listen to the Dhamma talk together and rejoice in the merit together.

Last but not least, we are also happy to tell you that different types of savory cuisines like Thai, Sri Lanka, Indian, Vietnamese will be served at the ceremony.

Your presence at the event will be of great pleasure for us.

May you be well, happy and peaceful!

With metta,
Ayya Nanadipa
