Ruth meets Boaz, who despite living at the same time as Judges 20-21, cares for and looks after the foreigner and the widow, becoming a place of safety, refreshment, and provision. Her good attitude, faithfulness, and kindness are well known to the people of the area. Naomi also demonstrates her own faithfulness in that, despite her bitterness and mourning in chapter 1, she still gives thanks to God and prays for blessing upon Boaz.

Going from the depravity and judgment in Judges, we now come to Ruth. Ruth takes place during the same time period but tells us a story of faithfulness, loyalty, redemption. It starts off with Naomi and her family moving to Moab during a famine, where her husband dies, her sons marry Moabite women and then die 10 years later, leaving Naomi and her two daughters-in-law as widows. She, understandably, is hurting and bitter. But in these times, we do well to remember the provision of God and the faithful friends He places in our lives.

The people of Israel come together to punish the people of Gibeah. Even though they seek God before each attack, they are still defeated twice before God finally gave them the victory. But we also see that we can still go astray if we mix our thoughts into His. They swear two rash oaths leading to the near destruction of one tribe and the slaughter of an entire city. When seeking God's will, which should always be doing, let's be sure that we follow His will and only His will.

*The more you are in the word of God, the Bible, the better will be your discernment. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you scripture and give you spiritual discernment in these last days...

"But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived."- 2 Timothy 3:13 King James Bible

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."- Hebrews 4:12 King James Bible

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."- 1 John 4:1-3 King James Bible

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."- John 14:26 King James Bible

Here we see a Levite traveling to bring his concubine home, only to be accosted by Benjamites in Gibeah, leading to the murder of his concubine at their hands.
This chapter comes with multiple warnings. First, our sin has consequences. Even if forgiven, there may still be consequences in this life. They were only traveling because the concubine had run off to play the harlot. She didn't deserve what happened, but if they were at home, it wouldn't have happened.
Next, we see that procrastinating and making unwise choices can have drastic results. They only stopped in Gibeah because he chose to stay all day at the father in law's house and then leave late in the day.
Third, we're warned that our own people aren't a guarantee of safety. Our hope and faith have to be on God, not man. He rejected the city of the Jebusites to stay in a city of Israel, yet his brethren were more of a danger than anyone else.
Lastly, we see that small steps away from God lead to bigger steps away from God. Despite being commanded to provide hospitality, the people of Gibeah refused. It was a fellow Ephraimite living in the town who gave him hospitality. That first step away led to much bigger steps, leading to their ultimate sin. The Levite took a concubine when God's plan has been for a husband and wife.

Follow God, keep His commands, and live as to bring glory to Him.

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."- Matthew 10:16 King James Bible

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."- Proverbs 27:17 King James Bible

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."- 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 King James Bible

"knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:"- 2 Peter 3:3-6 King James Bible

"But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."- Matthew 24:37-39 King James Bible

*The born-again Christian is to be a law-abiding citizen of his or her nation. However, when the state or nation calls the believer to go against the word of the Lord, the believer is to adhere to the scriptures and is to withstand the God-less directives of the state or nation. Keep this in mind going forward. Read the attached scriptures carefully...

"And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men."- Acts 5:27-29 King James Bible

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."- Romans 6:1-23 King James Bible
