Our History

FBC Pinson has a long and interesting history. It is one of the oldest churches in the area. In 1816, a wagon train of people from South Carolina were traveling to Florida. When they came through the area where Tennessee and Georgia Road crossed, the Anderson and Hagood families decided to leave the wagon train and make the area their home. They named the place Hagood’s Crossroads and became the first settlers in what is now Pinson.

In 1818, they founded Oldsides Baptist church, which some say, became Enon Baptist church. Enon Baptist was a story and a half log and board building. Some members left the church and founded FBC Trussville. The church at Hagood’s Crossroads was abandoned and fell down. No one knows how long the area was without a church. There is some question whether or not, the first church organized, is the FBC Pinson of today; but there was a church, organized in 1839 that became FBC Pinson. Since 1839, FBC Pinson, has been in continious service to the city of Pinson and the surronding area.

Here are some highlights about the church:

1839 - Six people , four ladies and two men, from the Anderson and Hagood families returned to the area, from Cahaba Baptist in Trussville and organized Salem Baptist Church in Hagood’s Crossroads. The church was also the first school in the area.

1874 - In January, a team was appointed to repair the church building.

1929 - In January, the church completed its first major building program. The sanctuary was enlarged to include a balcony and eight (8) Sunday school rooms, as well as a basement.

1936 - The church started another building project adding 11 more Sunday school rooms, a pipe organ, a furnace and finished the balcony. Pews and opera chairs were purchased.

1941 - A fire, from a over-heated furnace desroyed the church. Services were held in the pastorium basement until a new church was built.

1943 - On September 5, the church voted to change the name of the church from “Salem” to “First Baptist Church Pinson”. On November 21, a dedication service was held for the new church.

1949 - A education building was started.

1950 - On June 11, a dedication service was held for the education building. This building was built primarily by the men of the church.

1951 - 1980 - Between 1951 and 1980, the church continued to build and grow. February 12, 1978, the church broke ground for the Family Life Center and the old edcuation building was remodeled to build office space for the church staff. March 9, 1980, the new church sancturay was dedicated.

2000 - 2002 - The church awarded a contract to demolish the old church office building. In 2001, the church voted to build a two-story education/office facility. In 2002, the education building was completed.

2012 - The children’s building renovations were completed.
