Devo: 9 Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. 10 And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

Moses and Elijah, if they are the Two Witnesses will be left out on the streets of Jerusalem after they are martyred for 3 ½ days. This is done to desecrate their bodies and show utter disrespect to them. I can’t help but comment on “will see.” These events will be covered by the media. There will be cameras on their dead bodies the whole time. There will be plenty of media around after the rapture to record the events of the Tribulation. I figure that CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and MSMBC will be the official networks of the Anti-Christ. “Those who dwell on the earth,” the “earth-dwellers,” will rejoice over their demise. They are the “here and now crowd.” They were left behind during the rapture and he hearts have become harder and harder against God throughout the Tribulation.

Devo: Revelation 11:7 When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. 8 And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called S***m and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

These two were too good for the rotten world in which they lived. The world hates them and their message. When God is finished with their testimony, He allows the Anti-Christ to kill them. They are overcome and killed. Their bodies are desecrated by being left out on the streets. Their followers, friends are not allowed to bury them. They are killed at the Temple Mount. John is somewhat cryptic about where they are killed, although the description is indisputable. It is the city of Jerusalem, called in our Text, “the great city,” “S***m and Egypt,” but the identity is unmistaken when John says “where also the Lord was crucified.” Unmistakably, this is clearly Jerusalem. The Two Witnesses are killed and left out in the streets of Jerusalem for 3 ½ days.

It is impossible for me to do this devotion today without gratitude and not just a little bit of drama. “When they finish their testimony. . .” Did you hear that? The world wants to kill them, get rid of them, destroy them. The Anti-Christ has tried everything to get rid of them to no avail. “When they finish their testimony. . .” Even during the tribulation, a time set aside to judge humanity, even then, God gives the world an avenue to hear the Gospel. He gives them the 144,000 sealed evangelists. He gives them the two witnesses. Amazing. God is so good; all the time. I can’t tell you how this phrase has ministered to me. Since my bypass surgery in 2004, I’ve always felt like my time on earth was very limited. I have lived for 21 years since that surgery at the time that I am writing this. Amazing. But maybe, it’s about our testimony. God was not through with their testimony. Maybe He is not through with mine. A testimony is bragging on God for what He has done in your life. You have information about God. You can testify how He has blessed you, provided for you, answered your prayers, brought you deliverance or comfort. He is so good.

Devo: Matthew 17:1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

The Two Witnesses of Revelation 11 are fascinating to say the least. The Revelation Text does not name them but most every interpreter believes that this is Moses and Elijah called out of retirement again. They were definitely called out of retirement for the Transfiguration of Jesus. They met with Jesus on Mt. Tabor we think, to discuss the cross. The three disciples, James, John, and Peter saw Jesus in his glory. They were amazed by what all they saw. My pastor, Dr. Buddy Greer muses, “Perhaps, Moses said on the mountain, ‘Lord, it’s just like old times!’” Moses had been in Heaven for almost 1500 years and Elijah had been in Heaven for over 800 years. Here they are visiting Jesus and encouraging Him about the cross. Now, at least 2000 years later, they get called out of retirement again. “Mo and Eli, I got a job for you.” Amazing!

Devo: Revelation 11: 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

Let’s examine these two witnesses. There is a lot of detail in our Text. They have supernatural power to defend themselves. The world will hate them for preaching the Gospel and also for their putting plagues upon the earth dwellers. “Fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies.” Pretty tough stuff there! Hard to imagine. Their enemies are not allowed to harm or kill them. There are two signature moves of the two witnesses. They have the power to bring drought. No rain! Who does that remind you of? Alright, I can’t hold off any longer. The Text does not identify these two witnesses by name, BUT, they have the power to turn off the rain and the power to turn water into blood. Sound familiar? Elijah had the power to cause a drought for 3 ½ years. He told Ahab, “It ain’t gonna rain til I say so and I ain’t likely gonna say so because I’m leaving town.” We all know that Moses was the one who turned the river into blood. These plagues were their signature moves; actions that defined them. They are seen as nuisances and worse to the earth dwellers. You can’t kill them, you can’t get rid of them, and you can’t shut them up. On top of all that, they are causing havoc with our world. The earth dwellers hate these two witnesses.

Devo: Revelation 11:3 “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

The two witnesses preach from the Temple Mount. They will preach during the first half of the Tribulation. Their time is specified as 1260 days; yet another description of 3 ½ years. They preach the gospel for the first half of the Tribulation. Did you know the word “witness” is translated from the word we also get our word “martyr?” It makes perfect sense. One who gives his life for Jesus is the perfect witness; the ultimate witness. Martusin is the word for “witness” from the Greek μάρτυσι. You can hear the word “martyr” in the root of this word. The two witnesses will be empowered. They will have supernatural power to escape harm and death. They will be tremendously effective in presenting the Gospel. One more time, even during judgement, even during this time reserved for tribulation, God is using men and methods to get the Gospel out. Truly amazing!

Devo: Revelation 11:1 Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. 2 But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.

I had to lean on Wiersbe and his commentary “Be Victorious” for an understanding of verse 1-2. He explained that John measuring the Temple was a declaration that it still belonged to God. Your measure your stuff, you don’t measure other people’s stuff. There will be worship in the rebuilt temple during the first half of the tribulation. All of this is to delineate the mid-point of the Tribulation Period. After the mid-point, The Anti-Christ will defile the Temple and “they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.” The antecedent to “they” is the Gentiles. We cannot overstate the dramatic nature of the mid-point. Just to get our bearings, the Anti-Christ is assassinated and brought back to life. He is promoted from world dictator to world deity. The persecution greatly intensifies and those who refuse to worship the Anti-Christ are persecuted and many are martyred. At the same time, we are introduced to the “Two Witnesses.” You are going to love these guys!!

Devo: Revelation 10:8 Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.” 9 So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.” And he said to me, “Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.” 10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. 11 And he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

John the Apostle is once again commissioned to tell the story and the Gospel. It takes the revelation, the book and eats it. This is a symbol of receiving revelation. It made his stomach hurt because it was such a tough message. A message of judgement. The word of God is sweeter than honey, which was the sweetest thing that they knew about. We have butterfingers! We would say the Word of God is sweeter than a Butterfinger or a Snickers. The Word is also bitter because it doesn’t sugar coat the judgment that will come. John is once again commissioned to share this message. Share it even though it is judgement.
