"Looking back, one of the best worst things that has ever happened to me was reaching a dead end.
When I simultaneously lost my job, my residency, and my sense of direction in life. Even my body was falling apart: a bout of depression, panic attacks and anxiety constantly humming in the background.
That season was one of the best worst things because it taught me, in a way that nothing else could have, that when things are falling apart, they are actually falling into place.
Here is what I’ve come to understand about that season and every season like it:
A spiritual awakening — and I use that term not as a bypass but as a precise description of what happens — occurs when the life you’ve been living on the outside no longer matches the template you carry on the inside.
The conflict, the resistance, the sense that something is deeply wrong... that is not a sign that you are broken. That is often a sign that you have outgrown the paradigm you had been living under.
And the thing that intensifies the suffering is when you try to force the outside factors to stay the same: the job, the familiar comforts, the relationships, the manufactured life you’ve been carefully trying to manage & maintain."
—Jovanny Varela, excerpt from Gentle No 132, "Trust in NO (blessings also come in the form of endings)"
