The modern use of deaconesses emerged in the German Lutheran Church in the 1830s and was embraced by North American Lutherans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since 1922, the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod has been training, calling and commissioning deaconesses to serve Christ and His Church through works of mercy, spiritual care and teaching the faith. Equipped with God’s Word and the Lutheran Confessions, deaconesses bring Christ’s mercy into the world through diverse congregational, institutional and mission settings. They are witnesses to the living compassion of Christ and representatives of His Church, who cannot help but respond in love after receiving His gifts. Job descriptions are often tailored to the individual skills and abilities of a deaconess, and they vary according to the nature of the parish, institution or Recognized Service Organization in which she serves.
