In Nomine Jesus ~ A Service of the Word

GOD LOVES US SINNERS
They never forgot their past. Moses never forgot how he killed a man in anger. Paul never forgot how he attacked the Church of God. Matthew never forgot how, as a tax collector for the Roman Empire, he was considered a traitor to his people. But God forgot their past. He forgave all their sins and called them to proclaim his saving mercy. Christians are sinners whom God has mercifully called. Only mercy can explain why Jesus brings fallen people to faith and promises them eternal salvation. Only grace can explain how he calls them to serve as they are able, even in the ministry of the gospel. Yes, God loves us sinners.

Opening Hymn 575:1-2,4-5, By Grace I’m Saved
1. By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why waver at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? So then this word must true re-main: By grace you, too, shall heav'n ob-tain.

2. By grace God's Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit
That Jesus died, your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought him from his heav'nly throne.

4. By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation's furnace tried -- By grace, despite all fear and trouble,
The Father's heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure?

5. By grace! On this I'll rest when dying; In Jesus' promise I rejoice. For though I know my heart's condition,
I also know my Savior's voice. My heart is glad; all grief has flown since I am saved by grace alone.

INVOCATION / CONFESSION OF SINS
The grace of our Lord (†) Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you.
And also with you.
I was glad when they said to me,
Let us go to the house of the LORD, my God!
That you would allow us to gather in worship not out of duty, but
with forgiving joy and saving delight,
We praise you, LORD God, Heavenly Father!
That you bring us here where you promise to meet your people,
We praise you, LORD God, Beloved Son!
For being with us in all places and through all situations, and bringing us together as members of one body of Christ,
We praise you, LORD God, Holy Spirit!
We have come into the presence of the LORD, our God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to God, pleading for his mercy.
ALL: O LORD, Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you, I do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my risen Savior I pray, cleanse me from my sin by the blood of your Son. Remove my sin and guilt forever for Jesus’ sake, giving me peace and eternal life. LORD God, have mercy on me, a sinner, according to your unfailing love.

The LORD God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God man, God has removed your sin and guilt forever. You are his own dear child. With eternal life, through the gospel, the LORD your God gives you strength to live according to his will as revealed in his Word. Amen.

Prayer of the Day: (All) Almighty and merciful LORD God, you sent your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to seek and to save lost sinners. Graciously open our ears and hearts to hear his call to follow him by faith in his promises, that we may feast with him forever in his Kingdom; through your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated)

In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the LORD, our God.

Hymn of Praise: 654:1,3,5-7, Jesus Sinners Does Receive
1 Jesus sinners does receive; oh, may all this saying ponder
who in sin's delusions live and from God and heaven wander.
Here is hope for all who grieve: Jesus sinners does receive.

3 Sheep that from the fold did stray are not by the Lord forsaken; weary souls who lost their way are by Christ, the Shepherd, taken in his arms that they may live:
Jesus sinners does receive.
(3)
5 Oh, how blest is it to know, were as scarlet my transgression, it shall be as white as snow by your blood and bitter passion, for these words I do believe:
Jesus sinners does receive.

6 Now my conscience is at peace, from the law I stand acquitted. Christ has purchased my release and my ev'ry sin remitted. Naught remains my soul to grieve:
Jesus sinners does receive.

7 Jesus sinners does receive, even I have been forgiven.
And when I this earth must leave, I shall find an open heaven. Dying, still to him I cleave:
Jesus sinners does receive.

† God’s Word †
First Lesson: The LORD chooses murderer Moses to lead Israel.
Exodus 3:1-15, Now Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, a priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 The Angel of the LORD [Christ] appeared to him in blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire, but the bush was not burning up. 3 So he said, "I will go over and look at this amazing sight-- to find out why the bush is not burning up." 4 When the LORD saw that Moses had gone over to take a look, God called to him from the middle of the bush and said, "Moses! Moses!" Moses said, "I am here." 5 The LORD said, "Do not come any closer. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." 6 He then said, "I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 The LORD said, "I have certainly seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry for help because of their slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. 8 So I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now indeed, the Israelites' cry for help has come to me. Yes, I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 Come now, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt." 11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" 12 So he said, "I will certainly be with you. This will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain." 13 But Moses said to God, "If I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what should I say to them?" 14 So God replied to Moses, "I am who I am." He also said, "You will say this to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you." 15 God also told Moses, "Say this to the Israelites: 'The LORD, the God of your fathers-- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-- has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation.'

The Word of the LORD.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 119 Prayer: (All) LORD God, your Word is my delight. When I was lost in the darkness of sin, you penetrated my heart with the light of your Word. Let it enlighten my path each day that I may serve you in the holiness of your Son. Let your Word shine through all I say and do that others may see you, O LORD, and praise your saving name. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Second Lesson: (Sermon) God demonstrates mercy and patience by calling a sinner into the ministry to proclaim his grace to sinners.
1 Timothy 1:12-17, I give thanks to the one who empowered me, namely, Christ Jesus our Lord, that he treated me as trustworthy, appointing me into his ministry. 13 He did this even though formerly I was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. But I was shown mercy, because I acted ignorantly in unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord overflowed on me along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 This saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners," of whom I am the worst. 16 But I was shown mercy for this reason: that in me, the worst sinner, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his unlimited patience as an example for those who are going to believe in him, resulting in eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, to the immortal, invisible, only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Verse of the Day: Matthew 9:12-13, (All read) (6)
Alleluia! Jesus said to them, "The healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Alleluia!

Gospel Lesson: Tax collectors were considered among the worst of sinners. To demonstrate grace, Jesus called one to be his disciple.
Matthew 9:9-13, As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector's booth. He said to him, "Follow me." Matthew got up and followed him. 10 As Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners were actually there too, eating with Jesus and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, "The healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

This is the Gospel of our Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ! (7)
Hymn of the Day: 578, Chief of Sinners Though I Be
1 Chief of sinners though I be, Jesus shed his blood for me,
died that I might live on high, lives that I might never die.
As the branch is to the vine, I am his and he is mine!

2 Oh, the height of Jesus' love, higher than the heav'ns above, deeper than the depths of sea, lasting as eternity,
love that found me— wondrous thought—
found me when I sought him not.

3 Only Jesus can impart comfort to a wounded heart, peace that flows from sin forgiv'n, joy that lifts the soul to heav'n,
faith and hope to walk with God in the way that Enoch trod.

4 Chief of sinners though I be, Christ is all in all to me;
all my wants to him are known, all my sorrows are his own.
Safe with him in earthly strife, I await the heav'nly life.

5 Strengthen me, O gracious Lord, by your Spirit and your Word. When my wayward heart would stray, keep me in the narrow way; grace in time of need supply
while I live and when I die.

Sermon: 1 Timothy 1, Our God Loves Us Sinners
He treated me as trustworthy, appointing me into his ministry. He did this even though formerly I was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. This saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners," of whom I am the worst. But I was shown mercy for this reason: that in me, the worst sinner, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his unlimited patience as an example for those who are going to believe in him, resulting in eternal life.” (The Word of the Lord) Grace, mercy and peace to you, from our Father, and his beloved Son, who came into to save us sinners, dear fellow redeemed.
Last week we saw the holy Trinity commission us to do ministry to save souls from all nations. Today, we see our God loves sinners even using sinners in the holy ministry to lead more souls to heaven. Look at two of the greatest men in the church, Moses in the OT, Paul in the NT. Both murderers, both sinners, yet both called by God into the ministry to serve God’s people with the saving message. Hear the LORD’s call to Moses. “God replied to Moses, "I am who I am." He also said, "You will say this to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you. Say this to the Israelites: 'The LORD, the God of your fathers … has sent me to you.” (Ex 3:14-15) The ‘I AM’ LORD God loves to save sinners with his ministry of the gospel of Christ crucified for us.
The great Apostle Paul was not always such a saint. He gives a personal testimony, “Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.” Why does Paul remind Timothy of his ugly past? Paul does so to magnify the merciful grace of Christ. Pharisee Saul was a blasphemer. He violently persecuted those who did trust Jesus as Messiah, like Steven. “Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord.” (Act 9:1) Yet Saul was shown mercy. When the bright light flashed from heaven, Saul “fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” (Act 9:5) He was chosen by grace, called by the risen Christ, sent as an apostle to make disciples of lost sinners. Paul’s story shows our Savior’s great mercy. Instead of condemning and punishing Saul, in mercy Christ called him to be his apostle. Jesus included Paul when he prayed from the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Lk 23:34)
The humble and grateful apostle thanks Jesus for appointing him in the apostolic ministry. Paul uses the same Greek word of his ministry in Act 20:24, “However, I consider my life as of no great value to me, so that I may finish my race and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus-- to testify to the gospel of God's grace.” Paul says God’s grace was superabundant, overflowing to him in his sin. It turned Paul from unbelief to faith, a faith grew with faith’s love: love for Christ, love for his people, and love for Christ’s mission.
Paul tells us God’s mercy to sinners is not only his story, but his message, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-- of whom I am the worst.” Paul wanted his sinful past to reflect Christ’s abundant grace to save sinners. God's standard to enter heaven is absolute perfection, complete holiness. You and I have fallen woefully short of holiness. Paul writes, “There is no difference, because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and [All] are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God publicly displayed as the atonement seat through faith in his blood.” (Rom 3:23-25) See God’s love for sinners in the cross of Christ. Paul reminds us of the Words of our Lord. Jesus says, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mt 9:13) He calls you.
Since every person is born a sinner, Paul stresses the truth. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Each word is packed with meaning. Christ is the Anointed One, by the Father with the Holy Spirit when Jesus was baptized to begin his public ministry to save us sinners. Jesus is the Person conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, True God became true man. Jesus’ name means the LORD saves. Jesus willingly left glory to serve us by the gore of his cross to save this world. A world that denies him as the true God and Savior. A world that denies his Word of truth. This world still attacks God’s faithful followers. Jesus entered a wicked world that would cuss, curse, and crucify him. Yet he still came to save us sinners. Paul combines the incarnation of God the Son, his entering the world with the reason and purpose, “to save sinners.” Jesus says, “the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” (Lk 19:10) He seeks you!
What is more amazing that God does NOT have his holy angels preaching his gospel to this wicked world. Paul writes, “We hold this treasure in clay jars to show that its extraordinary power is from God and not from us.” (2 Cor 4:7) In ancient world, people hid their treasures in jars of clay, then buried it someplace on their property, hoping no one found it. The clay jar is supposed to protect the treasure. But for us it’s the opposite. The treasure, the gospel, our Savior protects us. God picks someone unfit and unsuitable. God uses weak, breakable, jars of clay like us Moses, a tax collector Matthew, Saul of Tarsus, and weak pastors today to show that the extraordinary power to save sinners comes from God and his message and not from us messengers. Sinners are more likely to approach other sinners to hear about God’s grace and forgiveness, shown in Paul, and in you and me.
As sinners, we can see ourselves in Paul’s story because it is our story. We’re all the same. We’re all chosen by God’s grace. Paul says, “The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” Many of us have known Jesus most of our lives. Yet we still sin. We doubt God’s truth. We lie. We haven’t helped or loved others as we should. We fail to forgive. We lust. We covet. We blaspheme. And sometimes we may be violent. We have unloving words leap from our lips. We sin often.
Yet, in his grace and mercy, Jesus died to forgive us. “God shows his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom 5:8) On his cross, Jesus was considered by the Father to be the worst of all sinners. Every sin of the world, every r**e, every murder, Paul’s sin, all yours and my sin were placed on Christ. Jesus was blasphemed for us blasphemers. Jesus was murdered for all murders. Jesus was punished by God for our sins, our doubts, our lack of love. Realize, you can never out sin God’s grace. He loves you.
The Spirit works through the message of Christ crucified for us to empower us to believe we are saved. The risen Jesus appeared to Paul on a road. Then Paul knew Jesus is his Promised Messiah. Three days later, Saul was baptized. Our God uses the same means of grace to save us. At our baptism, Jesus placed us into our heavenly Father’s lap and said, “Father this is one I died for. Father, see my scars. Forgive them. Love them, bless them as your sanctified children. For you sent me to save sinners.” Every time we confess our sins, and we trust in Christ, Jesus says, “I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Lk 15:10)
Heaven rejoices over you. Paul is an object lesson of God’s patience. “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.” Paul saw God’s wisdom in converting him. If Paul, the worst of sinners, was saved, then Christ can save anyone. We see the LORD use Moses in the OT, Paul in the NT, both murdering sinners to picture God’s overflowing grace and patience for all. Christ wants redeemed people who know his mercy, to proclaim his mercy, and share his mercy to other sinners. So God called Moses, Matthew, Paul, you and me to share his love, his grace, his saving truth.
As a result of his gracious mercy, we show our thanks as we serve him. Paul says, “I give thanks to the one who empowered me, namely, Christ Jesus our Lord, that he treated me as trustworthy, appointing me into his ministry.” The gospel empowered Paul to serve. Paul’s strength did not come from himself, but from Christ. We are like Paul, sinners, chosen, appointed, and strengthened by the gospel of Christ through the Spirit to serve as his messengers. Some of us full time, ministers, all of us part time, sharers of God’s love. We share God’s peace, even when hated. We serve with a forgiving heart, even to jerks. God has sent us to shine his saving light in this sin darken world. God encourages us by Paul’s story. We echo Paul, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13)
Jesus is your strength. When wickedness hurt you, your risen Redeemer comforts you. When death comes calling, when the grave seems near, our risen Savior’s empty tomb gives you hope and peace. Christ has conquered sin, Satan, and death for us. For all of God’s grace and mercy we praise him. With Paul we cannot help but sing the praises of our merciful King. Yes, thankfully, God loves us sinners. “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
May we always thank, praise, serve and obey our loving LORD God. God always loves you, dear sinner saved by his Son, Jesus. His grace abounds to you. We will spend eternity praising our loving Father, our victorious Savior, and the powerful Spirit for their extraordinary mercy to save us. Praise God to his glory! Amen.
“Now to the King eternal, to the immortal, invisible, only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

The APOSTLES’ CREED ~ All:
I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 715, Let Me Be Yours Forever
1 Let me be yours forever, my faithful God and Lord;
let me forsake you never nor wander from your Word.
Lord, do not let me waver but give me steadfastness,
and for such grace and favor your holy name I'll bless.

2 Lord Jesus, my salvation, my light, my life divine,
my only consolation, to you I all resign, for you have dearly bought me with blood and bitter pain.
Let me, since you have sought me, eternal life obtain.

3 O gracious Holy Spirit, my comforter and guide, grant that in Jesus' merit I always may confide, him to the end confessing whom I have known by faith.
Give me your constant blessing and grant a Christian death.

Prayer of the Church:
O LORD, gracious God, our maker and preserver, we thank and praise you, serve and obey you for all that you give us every day.
We are not worthy of all the mercies you have shown us.
You have given us your precious Word, to nourish our souls and to protect us from the lies and temptations of the devil, the wicked world, and our own sinful flesh.
We thank you for those who teach and preach your saving truth at this place and everywhere. Grant your gospel teachers a rich measure of patience, wisdom, and love.
Heavenly Father, shield us from every kind of danger, sudden
(9)
catastrophe, terrors of crime and the pain of disease. Watch over and keep our loved ones from whatever perils may harm them.
O compassionate and risen Christ, heal the sick, cheer the sad with your truth, calm the distressed with your peace, and comfort the old and infirm with your abiding presence.
Bless our land with rain and good crops. Grant wisdom and responsibility to all who hold offices of high trust. Bless our farms and factories. Keep our government and schools strong and honest for the good of our citizenship, so we may enjoy your gifts of peace, security, and well-being.
LORD God, grant your blessings to every nation on earth for the sake of your Bride, the Church. Where there are wars, give your peace. Where there is hatred, let it be healed. Where there is poverty, corruption, danger, and disaster, come with your almighty power and providence to help and restore for the sake of your Son.
Hear us, LORD God, as we bring our private petitions. (Silent Prayer)
LORD God almighty, we bring our requests to you in the name of Jesus. We know that you hear us for his sake. Take all that we have: our bodies and minds, our time and talents, our offerings and ministries to use them to bring others to you, to your glory.
We give ourselves to you, to serve you in whatever way is pleasing to you, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Please stand for the LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn 576, Amazing Grace
1 Amazing grace— how sweet the sound—
that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

2 The Lord has promised good to me,
his Word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come; 'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

4 When we've been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.

May 31, 2026 ~ Trinity Sunday
THE MYSTERY AND MAJESTY OF OUR TRIUNE GOD
On the Feast of Trinity, we see God’s Word creates our faith in the Holy Trinity. As we read God’s Word from the first verse of Genesis to the last verse of Revelation, he gives us hints and glimpses of his Triune nature. We believe the LORD our Triune God. “Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever.” (Athanasian Creed) The doctrine of the Trinity is central to our salvation. God’s very existence is a mystery, far beyond our ability to comprehend. Yet, while we cannot understand everything about God, he is still worthy of our praise. The Triune LORD is our Father Creator, Redeemer Son, and Spirit Sanctifier. One God, three Persons! This festival of the Holy Trinity begins the second half of the Church Year with people being baptized and blessed in the name of the Trinity, the only true God.

Opening Hymn 483, Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth, and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

(Please Stand)
In the name of our Triune LORD: Father, Son (†), and Holy Spirit.
Amen.
O Triune GOD, in your mercy, teach us your holy ways.
LORD GOD, as your humble and redeemed servant, give me understanding of your Word so I know your saving will.
We praise you, holy Trinity for your saving grace
For wanting all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of your saving truth.
We praise our heavenly Father, who created us.
But sometimes we fail to trust that He is still protecting and preserving us, and fail to trust he is doing what is best for us.
We praise the only begotten Son, who has redeemed us.
But sometimes we fail to trust that our risen and ascended Lord Jesus is interceding for us, and ruling all things for our good.
We praise the Holy Spirit, who sanctifies us by the gospel of Christ crucified for us.
Yet at times, we fail to trust and obey what the Spirit says in the Bible, his inspired Word of truth.

We confess our sinfulness, pleading for our Trinity’s mercy.

All: Holy LORD and merciful Triune GOD, I confess that I am sinful by nature. I have not feared you, not loved you, nor trusted you as I should. I have often disobeyed you in my selfish thoughts, wicked words, and unloving actions. I have done what is evil. I have failed to do good. For this I deserve your punishment of death and hell, now and forever. But I am truly sorry for all of my sins. Dearest Father, send the Holy Spirit to comfort me with faith and hope in the Son, my risen Savior Jesus Christ. O LORD my Triune God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

LORD God, our heavenly Father has been merciful to us. He gave his only begotten Son to be the atoning sacrifice for all of our sins. The Holy Spirit has enlightened our hearts to believe the gospel of Christ for our forgiveness and eternal life. “This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life.” (1 Jn 5:11) By the authority of the LORD our Triune God, I forgive all your sins in the name of the Father, the Son, (†) and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Prayer of the Day: (All pray) Almighty LORD God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ. In your mercy cleanse my heart and my lips from doubt and fear. I will ever worship you, one true LORD, eternal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, living and reigning, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated)

† GOD’s Holy WORD †
First Reading: (Sermon) Our triune God shows creative power.
Genesis 1:1–2:3, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was undeveloped and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 God said, [Spoke the Word, the Son] "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." There was evening and there was morning-- the first day. 6 God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, and let it separate the water from the water." 8 God called the expanse "sky." There was evening and there was morning-- the second day. 9 God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear," and it was so. The waters under the sky gathered to their own places, and the dry land appeared. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathering places of the waters he called "seas." God saw that it was good. 11 God said, "Let the earth produce plants-- vegetation that produces seed, and trees that bear fruit with its seed in it-- each according to its own kind on the earth," and it was so, and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning-- the third day. 14 God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night, and let them serve as markers to indicate seasons, days, and years. 15 Let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth," and it was so. He also made the stars. God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning-- the fourth day. 20 God said, "Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds and other winged creatures fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky." God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them when he said, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." 23 There was evening and there was morning-- the fifth day. 24 God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their own kind, livestock, creeping things, and wild animals according to their own kind," and it was so. God saw that it was good. 26 God said, "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that crawls on the earth." 27 God created the man in his own image. In the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 29 God said, "Look, I have given you every plant that produces seed on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that bears fruit that produces seed. It will be your food. 30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning-- the sixth day. 2:1 The heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. 2 On the seventh day God had finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had been doing. 3 God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it he rested from all his work of creation that he had done.

Hymn 586, Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest
1 Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and make our hearts your place of rest; come with your grace and heav'nly aid,
and fill the hearts which you have made.

3 In you, with graces sevenfold, we God's almighty hand behold while you with tongues of fire proclaim
to all the world his holy name.

4 Your light to ev'ry thought impart, and shed your love in ev'ry heart; the weakness of our mortal state
with deathless might invigorate.

6 Teach us to know the Father, Son, and you, from both, as Three in One that we your name may ever bless
and in our lives the truth confess.

7 Praise we the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, with them One, and may the Son on us bestow
the gifts that from the Spirit flow!

Sermon: Matt 20, The Trinity Commissions Ministry
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw [the risen Jesus], they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they were uncertain. Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age." (The Word of the Lord) In the name of the LORD our Triune God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, dear fellow Redeemed.
How do you describe the Holy Trinity? How do you explain the Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God to a child? The doctrine of the Trinity is the result of faithful examination of the Scriptures. Our LORD is three separate divine Beings yet one eternal God. Early on, in the NT Church, Satan attacked the doctrine of Trinity. In 325, 1700 years ago, the early Church defended the teaching of Trinity with the Nicene Creed. After more attacks, the Church defends the Trinity with the Athanasian Creed. The Creed confesses, “And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal.” The Triune God created us, redeemed us by the blood of the Son, and sanctifies by using the gospel of Christ. God wants you to be saved.
Although the Bible assigns works to each Person of the Trinity, the Creator Father, the Redeemer Son, the sanctifying Holy Spirit, the external acts of the Godhead are shared. The Father created, the Son created, the Spirit created. The Father sanctifies, the Son sanctifies, the Holy Spirit sanctifies. The only acts not shared are the internal works, the Fatherhood, the Son-hood, and the proceeding Spirit.
Jesus told the apostles before he died to meet him in Galilee. (Mt 26:32) The angel on Easter Sunday reminded the apostles to go to Galilee. (Mt 28:7) So, “The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they were uncertain.” This is most likely the fourth time the risen Jesus speaks with his apostles. They worshipped him. Jesus is the exalted Son of God, the risen Messiah, their glorious Redeemer. He defeated sin, Satan, and death. Still, some had uncertainty. Our fallen flesh doubts. It is the same word used to describe Peter when he was walking on the water to Jesus, then began to sick. Jesus grabbed Jesus by the hand and rebuked him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Mt 14:31) Doubt clouded Peter’s heart on the water. Doubt clouded hearts of disciples seeing the risen Jesus. You are blessed, not seeing, yet believing!
“Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Jesus has all supreme divine authority. Our living Lord’s authority was given from the Father for him to use all things for the sake of his Church. When Jesus speaks his creation obeys. Do we?
How comforting with all the chaos and wars these days, to know Jesus has supreme authority on earth and in heaven. He is God, our Savior Lord. When the Apostle John was given a vision, he wept since no one had authority to open the seals of the future of the NT church. John was told, “Stop weeping. Look! The Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, [Jesus] has triumphed and is able to open the scroll and its seven seals." When the Lamb took the scroll … they sang a new song, saying: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and you bought us for God with your blood out of every tribe and language and people and nation. You made them to be a kingdom and priests for our God, and they will reign on the earth. (Rev 5:5, 8-10) Christians now reign on earth with our prayers to our almighty Jesus, who has all power and authority. Paul adds, “God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Phil 2:9-10) The risen Christ commissions his Church.
“Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you.” All nations are invited to believe, trust, and follow Christ. All nations need Jesus. Jesus loves all nations. Jesus invites all groups, all cultures, all people to his saving Kingdom. Christians proclaim the gospel cure for sin is the crucified and risen Christ to all nations. How do we make disciples of Christ from all nations? “By baptizing and by teaching all his Words to all nations.” We make disciples by God’s Word and sacrament! The same verb is used in Acts 14:21, “After they preached the good news in that city [Derbe] and had gathered many disciples.” Sinners are saved through the Spirit working through the gospel message. “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message comes through the Word of Christ.” (Rom 10:17) Sinners are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. On this Trinity Sunday, we go back in our baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity. In baptism God adopts a us into his family, covers us with Christ’s holiness, (Gal 3:27) connects us to his death and resurrection. (Rom 6) Each member of the Trinity is present at our baptism just like Christ’s baptism. God puts his name on us. He claims us to be his own. We receive the Father’s love, the Son’s redemption, and the Holy Spirit’s gift of saving faith.
Jesus clearly identifies himself as God. There is no authority in heaven or on earth that is not his. Who else can say that but the one true God? Christ tells the disciples to teach everything that he has commanded in his Word. Jesus is true God with all authority.
And yet, when he commands the Church to baptize, Jesus does not tell us to baptize only in his name. We baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is no other God but the true Triune God. All three persons are linked together in the baptism formula. Yet each person is distinct. The more we study the Trinity, the more it defies our reason: three distinct Persons, yet One eternal God.
Our Lord command to love others still stands, “If you hold on to my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have held on to my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that my joy would continue to be in you and that your joy would be complete. “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.” (Jn 15:10-12) Yet, how often have we failed to love others as Christ loved you? How often have we failed to make disciples of all nations, our hurting neighbor? How often have we failed to share all his Words? For our doubts we deserve God’s wrath.
Instead, we receive God’s grace. “You were buried with Christ in baptism. In baptism you were also raised with him through the faith worked by the God who raised Christ from the dead.” (Col 2:12) “Baptism now saves you - not the removal of dirt from the body but the guarantee of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” (1 Pet 3:21) By God’s Word, you’re forgiven, covered by the Son, sealed by the Spirit, claimed by the Father.
The forgiving peace of the Trinity motivates us to obey all his commands. Our forgiveness makes us want to. Now, in your full and free salvation, love others as God have loved you. Share Christ and all his Words of truth. Defend the commands of Christ, despite those who deny Holy Scriptures. Love your reigning Lord. Love others as a redeemed and sanctified child also loved by the holy Triune God.
Never forget our almighty risen Savior’s promise, “And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.” Jesus promises his abiding presence with us, no matter where we are. Jesus is with us all our days; good days and bad days, boring days and busy days. He is with us on days we wish to stay in bed and the days we cannot wait to get out of bed. No one but the one true only God with all authority could make such a promise and keep it. His believers are never alone. Christ is with us always. With his full authority, we call others to repent, to turn from sin, to proclaim the forgiveness of sins in Christ. He has sent us, his own Spirit, to be with us, to be in us, and to bear fruit through us. The Trinity does ministry through us.
Don’t let your doubts dishonor the Trinity, or let the world mock our Triune God. Our Father provides for us every day ~ fear, love, and trust God your Father. The Son has lived for you, died in your place, and rules with all authority ~ fear, love, and trust God the Son. The Holy Spirit makes you holy, set apart from the world by the gospel of Jesus ~ fear, love, and trust the Holy Spirit. Three Beings, One God!
See the grace, the love, the fellowship of the Trinity in your life. Yes, The Trinity Commissions Ministry! See the hidden LORD God reveals himself as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to save lost sinners. See the Trinity revealed in Revelation 1, “Grace to you and peace from him who is, who was, and who is coming, [The Father] and from the seven spirits [the Holy Spirit] that are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his own blood and made us a kingdom and priests to God his Father—to him be the glory and the power forever.” (1:4-6) Yes, The Trinity Commissions Ministry! Amen.
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Amen

We confess our faith in the Trinity with the Athanasian Creed.
This creed is named after St. Athanasius, a staunch defender of the true Christian faith in the 4th Century. It was prepared to assist the Church in combating two errors against the Bible’s clear teaching. One error denied God’s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one Being or Godhead with the Father. The other error denied Jesus Christ is true God and true man in one Person. The Athanasian Creed continues to serve the Christian Church as a standard of Scriptural truth, a fitting confession of our faith for Trinity Sunday.

Now this is the true Christian faith:
We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being.
For each person—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is distinct, (8)
but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one,
equal in glory and coeternal in majesty.
What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit.
The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated;
The Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite;
The Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal;
yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite.
In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty;
yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty.
So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God;
yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord;
yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord.
For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord,
so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords.
The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone.
The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone.
The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son.
So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior,
But all three persons are coequal and coeternal, (9)
so that, in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God, and one God worshiped as three persons.
Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity.
It is furthermore necessary for eternal salvation truly to believe that our Lord Jesus Christ also took on human flesh.
We believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is both God and man.
He is God, eternally begotten from the nature of the Father, and he is man, born in time from the nature of his mother, fully God, fully man with rational soul and human flesh,
equal to the Father as to his deity, less than the Father as to his humanity.
And though he is both God and man, Christ is not two persons but one.
One, not by changing the deity into flesh, but by taking the humanity into God;
One, indeed, not by mixture of the natures, but by the unity in one person
For just as the rational soul and flesh are one human being, so God and man are one Christ.
He suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose the third day from the dead.
He ascended into heaven is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, and from there will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming, all people will rise with their own bodies to answer for their personal deeds. Those who have done good (by faith in Christ) will enter eternal life,
but those who have done evil (without faith in Christ) will go into eternal fire.
This is the true Christian faith.
Whoever does not firmly and faithfully believe this cannot be saved. Amen. (10)

Hymn 612:1,3-4, How Great Thou Art
1 O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hands hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed;
Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross my burden gladly bearing
he bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain]

4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim: "My God, how great thou art!" [Refrain]

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH FOR HOLY TRINITY

O Triune GOD, you are the one eternal LORD we praise forever. We could never fully know you, O holy and hidden Trinity,
If you had not revealed yourself to us in your Word as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three Beings, yet one holy LORD GOD.
Dear heavenly Father, we know every good gift comes from you.
Open our eyes to see you guarding and protecting us. We receive all our daily blessings from you with thanksgiving.
O Lord Jesus, you revealed our Father to us, help us trust who you are, the God/man, believe all you did, and still doing for us.
Jesus, you became one of us in our flesh. You redeemed us by your blood. You rescued us from sin, Satan, and death.
O Creator Spirit, you opened our eyes of faith by your true Word.
You inspired the Scriptures. You breathed spiritual life into our hearts by the powerful gospel. By your Word help us grow in understanding and depth of your grace for us.
O Holy Trinity, we praise you for all the blessings you give us. You are the LORD God almighty, full of grace and glory.
(12)
We rejoice to call you the LORD our God: dear Father, beloved Son, and Holy Spirit. We praise you for saving us. Amen.
We stand to pray The LORD’S PRAYER:
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR:
It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O LORD, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who by his willing sacrifice on the cross took away the sins of the world and by his glorious resurrection restored everlasting life. Now, dear LORD, invited by your grace through your Holy Spirit and instructed by your holy Word, we approach your dedicated table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, preserve us by your grace in the true faith in our risen Savior until we feast with Jesus and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting.
Amen

Words of Institution
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the LORD be with you always.
Amen.
O Christ, Lamb of God, Agnus Dei (13)

Distribution to Confirmed members, Hymn 667, Lord Jesus Christ

Communing members please register. If you are not a member of a WELS or ELS congregation, we ask that you would not partake of the Lord’s Supper. We have a “Close” Communion Practice: In the Lord’s Supper, God’s Word assures us we receive the true body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ in, with, and under the bread and wine. Jesus promises our sins are truly forgiven. Holy Communion also proclaims all who receive the sacrament are ONE “close” in faith. Since we don’t know that this unity of faith exists with our guests, and since Holy Scripture also urges the Church to administer this sacrament with great care, (1 Cor 11:29) we ask our guests observe the sacrament. Pastor is happy to speak to anyone interested in Communion in the future.
Blessing
May the true body, and the true blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, strengthen you, and keep you in the true faith unto life everlasting. Your sins are forgiveness. You have peace with God. Amen!
(Please stand to thank the LORD)
Give thanks to the LORD our God, for he is good. (14)
His mercy endured forever.
Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup (1 Cor 11:26)
We proclaim our Lord’s death until he comes.

We give you thanks, O LORD, almighty Triune God, that you have refreshed us with this saving gift. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you, and increase our love for one another. We ask this Father, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Blessing
The LORD bless you and keep you.
The LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The LORD look on you with favor and give you (†) peace.

Amen.

Closing Hymn 928, May the Grace of Christ Our Savior
May the grace of Christ our Savior and the Father's boundless love with the Holy Spirit's favor rest upon us from above. Thus may we abide in union with each other and the Lord, and possess in sweet communion
joys which earth cannot afford.
