Meditations in Proverbs 2:9
Proverbs 2:9 โThen shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.โ
The first word in this verse is very important. We all want to be righteous and fair. We want to do right and take good paths in our life. What comes before this verse is telling up how to get the things that we desire. To receive the good things that God wants us to have, we must first become teachable and willingly put ourselves next to the one who wants to teach us. We must understand that there is no magic pill that will transform us into the things that we want to be.
We must go to school to learn the ways of righteousness and equity. We cannot walk the good paths until we know what they are and then learn how to walk upon them. The start of finding the good that God has for us, is that we must be willing to receive His instruction, His correction, and His reproof. These things are found in His Word. We must receive His Word. We must incline our ear unto His wisdom. His wisdom, sound wisdom, only comes from Him and it is found in His Word. We must seek it and hold on to it as the treasure that it is. We cannot just walk down the beach of His Word, picking up the pretty shells that we see. We must search for everything that He has for us. It cannot be a casual stroll in the sunset, it must be an intentional, focused pursuit. We must become passionate about finding the things that He has for us. We must be willing to take and to receive the hard things along with the pleasant things.
We must face and learn the fear of the Lord. Learning who and what God is, is overwhelming and scary at times. He is so much more that we can ever understood or even imagine that we must stop trying to do it ourselves and just humbly receive Him. We must face that we are nothing without Him and that anything that we are and everything that we have comes from Him.
Once we begin to learn to properly fear and to worship Him, we can begin to walk His good paths. He lays up for us the things that we desire to have and to become along His good paths. As we travel upon His path, He gives us the things that He has for us.
One of the things that we must learn is that we cannot build or achieve the things that He has for us on our own. As long as we strive in our own power we will never get where we want to be or where God wants us to be. We must learn that to receive the things of God, we must put ourselves under His authority and guidance. We can only receive from Him when we submit to Him. He will give us righteousness. He will make us holy. He will give us the characteristics that He wants us to have. He will instruct us in His holiness, His righteousness, His equity, His meekness, His long-suffering, His joy and all the other things that He wishes to give us. Before we can walk in these things, we must humble ourselves and receive them.
God gives us what He wants us to have. We must willingly and humbly receive what He gives. We must put aside our thoughts about how things work and follow wherever He leads. We must willingly seek and receive His instruction, His correction, and His reproof. He will lead us in His good paths and supply us with all that we need and desire. We must become the student and desire to learn what the great Teacher had for us. We must do our homework and study for our tests. He will teach us, we must be willing to learn.
