The UCC was founded in 1957 as the union of several different Christian traditions: from the beginning of our history, we were a church that affirmed the ideal that Christians did not always have to agree to live together in communion. Our motto—"that they may all be one"—is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. The UCC is one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States.

There is an old adage suggesting that anyone can create a sermon if they can put together three points and a poem. With inspiration from the poetry of Mary Oliver, we will turn that around this Sunday and see what happens. Join us on Sunday, September 6, 2026, when the sermon will be titled "Three Poems and a Point."

We will also celebrate Holy Communion.

The God Who Can't Be Conjured
Exodus 3:1-15

Today, I want us to think together about the Church as a Called Body, the Church as Alternative, and the Church as Resistance. It would be my druthers, however, not to consider the Church in the sense of its entire scope as the Body of Christ across the planet. And even though we will employ the United Church of Christ Statement of Faith as a way of framing our calling. I'm not interested today in spitballing about the future of the United Church of Christ.

Let's get local! Let's consider the teeny tiney fragment of the Body of Christ which assembles weekly at 895 Linden Rd. in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Let's ponder what it might mean for this sliver of the Body of Christ to be a Called Body, to be Alternative and to be Resistance.

Exodus describes a connection between God and God's people which is fraught with relational possibility. The relationship isn't grounded in a code or a creed or a set of codes and creeds; it is based on encounter. It is unsettled and open. It is being worked out. The relationship is open to surprise, capable of disputer, capable of reversals.

In Exodus, God is a still-speaking God and a still-doing God and a still-relating God.

You decide. Is a journey into Exodus timely?
