Tonight I was pulling our song sheets for this Sunday, including the one pictured. Every so often a chord chart will come out dimpled up like this one is, evidence that we were playing it outside in the rain at some point in the past. This always fills my heart with gratitude for the fact that we get to worship outside in the elements without the barrier of walls or a roof. The rain-dimpled paper means that we don’t operate in the consistent, predictable, and controlled environment of a standard church building. It means that what we do isn’t easy or convenient and calls to mind times we’ve brought good news in song and teaching of God’s word during a wildfire with no power and smoke so thick we could hardly catch a breath to sing over in Jackson, sometimes in the cold, sometimes in the heat, house to house doing “quarantine caroling” during the pandemic, and always for the “whosoevers” that come intentionally or happen to be in earshot and wander in (or just wander close). My heart is full and I am thankful that our gracious God allows us to be involved in His work in the way that we are. As this song says, “He made me, He loves me, He knows all my story, I shall look upon His face by and by.”
