Pastor Nate Lundgren died on January 8, 2026. His memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m. Pastor Nate was the guiding light that brought me to the ministry of Swan Valley and Maple Hill Lutheran Churches. Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.
Until we meet again, dear friend. You are loved!

January 5, 2015
The Twelfth Day of Christmas - Love - Oh to define love, there are, I suppose, many types. The dictionary states it as a very profound feeling of affection. Pffft, that cannot begin to describe the love a parent feels for their newborn child or their adult child for that matter. It encompasses the most intimate, deepest feeling that while some say comes from the heart it is an all over from the tips of your toes to the last fleeting thought in your head sort of feeling. Over-used, we often talk about "loving" something so much, "I love your hair!" "I love the color purple! (which for me also relates to the color of the uniform of the football team I love!)" "We love each other to the moon and back." Yes, we even try to measure just how much we love each other. I think when we truly love someone so deeply it is hard to be away from them. You've felt it, that ache in your stomach when separated from those you love. The feeling of loss when you know it will be a very long time if you ever see them again. That is the kind of deep love that comes from the Christmas story. A love so profound that it is immeasurable in words that we try to use to describe it. A love so profound that sacrifice was made on our behalf. The Bible has so many beautiful scripture passages about love. As I leave you with this last gift of Christmas think about your favorite passage. Most of you will be able to quote a few of them. My favorite two are "Faith, Hope, Love abide these three, but the greatest of these is Love." 1 Cor. 13:13 and "I am convinced nothing can separate us from the love of God which is Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38 God of Abundant Love, Thank you for the gift that is Christ Jesus, our Lord. You have blessed our Christmas journey for yet another season. Bring comfort to those who have had to say good-bye to the ones they love until that day when all believers in Christ are called to the banquet table. Grant reassurance to those whose separation is earthly until that time when they rejoin their loved ones in celebration. For parents and siblings, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and friends we ask for your abundant love and grace to unite us and fill our hearts. Now and evermore. And again we say, Amen! Merry Loving Blessed Christmas!

The concept of resolutions started roughly 4000 years ago by the Babylonians. They celebrated their new year (not January 1) by making promises to various gods and deities hoping to appease them and have good fortune...or at least not bad fortune. The Romans also practiced this ritual sometime after Julius Caesar instituted the Julian calendar. They prayed to the god Janus (January). Around 1740 John Wesley, founder of modern day Methodis began the tradition of watch night services with hymn singing, scripture readings and folks making resolutions to be better Christians. Whether you are a resolution maker or not the success of the changes you desire at any time of the year are dependant on your conscientious effort to put those into practice. I recently had a conversation with a delightful young woman about being kind, forgiving, thoughtful. She was telling me of her prayers to be kinder, more loving and understanding. I felt like I was staring in a mirror (although she is much more beautiful than I can aspire to!). I said, "you know I wake up every morning and that is my morning prayer, but I feel that I fail so miserably most of the time." Many people have said they hope this next year is a better year. Let us take it day by day, promise by promise and may we all find a way to be better than yesterday.
God of the Christmas Promise, You fulfilled your promise through the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, lovingly, painfully giving him to us, for us. Your salvation is for all people, for all time. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may be a part of that beautiful promise bringing good news and great joy to those around us. Help us to be messengers not only in word but in deed. Reform our hearts and minds so that we are resolute in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And again we say, Amen! Happy, Safe, and Blessed New Year! YOU ARE LOVED! Sandy

MAPLE HILL ADJUSTING WORSHIP SCHEDULE FOR 2026
As a result of declining membership and worship attendance, the Council has voted to cut worship to a once monthly schedule, the first Sunday of each month, beginning January 4th. As a community of faithful believers, worship is an integral part of supporting each other and the faith life within our community. With that comes a responsibility for which the council has had to make some very tough decisions. Your council members need your support as they lead this congregation into the new year. Please keep them in your prayers and offer your support when called upon for future action.

Maple Hill Council to meet following worship on January 4 to complete the 2026 budget.
