Pine Forest Historical Church of Christ Building

Pine Forest Historical Church of Christ Building This historical 100 year old building is available for your wedding, reunion, family gathering, etc.. Rettman, Sr. Mr. The new building was completed in 1914.

Restoring History in Pine Forest
In 1907 the Pine Forest Church of Christ congregation, which consisted of the families just to name a few, of Maddox, Bradford, Fausett, Rettman, Trapp and Watkins were meeting in the Woodmen of the World building. They wanted to build their own building so the solicited the help of William J. a German member of the group, who volunteered to draw plans for a buildi

ng. Also being conservative, Rettman suggested that the congregation pay for building materials as they went, with no indebtedness. The rough lumber for the building was sawn and hauled by wagon from a sawmill in the Pine Hill community. Finished lumber was purchased in Jefferson and hauled by train to Pickton, where it was picked up in wagons and brought to the site. The bricks for the chimney were donated by George Washington Allen, who owned a brick kiln in the northwest part of the community. Allen also built the chimney without charge. The pews and communion table had arrived but the speaker’s podium did not. Rettman spent the Saturday before the first service, building a podium from scrap lumber and preparing it for the service. On Sunday morning Jacob Foster, preached the first sermon in the new building, in Pine Forest. During the following years the congregation had a membership of over one hundred members. The 1940’s began a decline in membership, as young men went and served in WWII and did not return to their family farms. The 1950’s saw another decline as the young people left the community to attend college and found jobs in the cities. But it wasn’t until 1992 that the small group decided to close to this house of worship and attend in other congregations. Now the building has been restored to be used by the community for events, such as reunions and worship services etc..

This past weekend some of the James Cope and Nancy Bradford descendants gathered at the old church for a reunion. The old building was originally built by several men in the community, including James Cope Bradford. It still stands today and continues to bless those who use it.

As you know we are getting ready to get the old building painted. In our efforts to reach our goal of $3800 to pay for this to be done we will host a fish fry on the last Saturday of September. During that event we will offer up a few items to auction. In the next few weeks we will post those items. If you cannot be there that afternoon you can message me with a silent bid.

The first item is one of my favorites🤗... favorite thing to hang in my home, have tossed across a bed, and one of my favorites pieces of art. A recent find that I noticed immediately the quality of work. The colors, combinations of patterns and the intricate detail plus the ole Methodist or Baptist fan quilting detail gave part of its story away.

This piece of art was obviously created by an avid lover of design and someone who loved the look and feel of fabric. They thought through the finished product and bam! A piece of history was created. To be loved and cherished for many years... by someone. Maybe you🤗

Had a great turnout for the meeting on Tuesday night. Plans are being made to get the building painted with several ideas. Go Fund Me, Fish Fry and other donations. Brad Bradford was elected Vice President, Meagan Williams treasurer, and Daci Anglin secretary. Look for some great things coming up in the fall.
