Caution- Major Heatwave. Please check on your neighbors, friends and loved ones to ensure they are safe and have plenty of water .

As temperatures across Jefferson County are expected to reach a dangerous heat index of approximately 105 degrees later today, every resident is encouraged to take this weather threat seriously.

Extreme heat is more than an inconvenience. It can quickly become a life-threatening emergency, particularly for our senior citizens, individuals with chronic medical conditions, young children, and those who spend extended periods outdoors.

One of the greatest strengths of Jefferson County has always been the way we look after one another. Today, we ask every family, neighbor, church, civic organization, and community volunteer to help ensure that no one faces these dangerous temperatures alone.

If you have an elderly parent, grandparent, neighbor, or friend, please take a few moments to check on them. Make sure they have access to air conditioning or another cool environment, are drinking plenty of water, and have everything they need to remain safe throughout the day. Sometimes a simple phone call, a bottle of cold water, or offering someone a ride to a cooler location can make all the difference.

Everyone is also reminded to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, remain hydrated, and never leave children, seniors, or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a few moments. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly in a very short period of time.

At the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, protecting our community extends far beyond law enforcement. It includes caring for those who are most vulnerable and encouraging neighbors to look after neighbors.

Together, we can help ensure that everyone safely gets through this period of extreme heat.

Please stay cool, stay hydrated, stay informed, and above all, stay safe.

Lafayette Woods, Jr.
Sheriff

Look at all this zucchini! Come one, come all and get as much as you want. Fried zucchini, zucchini bread, or vegetable lasagna, there are lots of ways to use it. Slice it dice it and freeze it, but let’s get it out into the community. Just come to N2N M-F from 9:00-2:30 and pick it up for you, your family, your food pantry, or your church because we have another load of mystery veggies coming next Thursday! Come every Thursday during the summer. The Arkansas Foodbank wants to help us help you.
