This coming Sunday, August 30, Pastor Jason Boothe will continue the sermon series “The Sovereign Hand of God in the Pit” with Part Four: "God's Providence Rules Even Over the Decisions of Wicked Men" (Genesis 37:25-28)

"And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt."

Joseph’s circumstances appeared to be controlled by hatred, betrayal, and human sin. Yet every step of his journey remained under the sovereign rule of God. The pit was painful, but the Lord was already directing Joseph toward the place where His greater purpose would unfold.

When life becomes dark or confusing, God has not lost control. His hand remains steady, His purposes remain certain, and His grace faithfully preserves His people.

"And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it." - Genesis 37:23,24

Even in the pit, God is still at work!

In Part Three of The Sovereign Hand of God in the Pit, we saw that hatred, betrayal, and hardship could not overturn God’s purpose for Joseph. The pit appeared to be a place of defeat, but it was actually one step along the path of divine providence.

Take heart today. When you cannot see the Lord’s hand, you can still trust His heart. No trial can cancel His promises, and no earthly power can prevent Him from accomplishing His gracious purpose.

“The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” Psalm 33:11

What does it truly mean to repent, and where should a Christian look for assurance of salvation? Too often, believers are directed inward and encouraged to measure their standing with God by how successfully they have “turned from sin.” Such an approach produces uncertainty, fear, and endless self-examination.
