HURRICANE LOWELL CLOSES IN ON HAWAII KAUAI NOW UNDER HURRICANE WARNING

Hawaii’s situation is becoming much more serious.

Major Hurricane Lowell is now packing 115 mph winds and moving north-northeast toward the islands. At 5 a.m. HST Monday, the storm was about 375 miles southwest of Lihue, and its track had shifted farther east—bringing the center potentially within roughly 50 miles west of Niihau Monday night into Tuesday.

Kauai County and Niihau are now under a Hurricane Warning, while Oahu is under a Tropical Storm Watch. Rainbands from Lowell are already spreading across Kauai and Oahu, with winds expected to strengthen as the hurricane makes its closest approach.

Lowell is forecast to weaken gradually but officials still expect it to remain a hurricane while passing near Hawaii.

This is no longer just a storm being watched from hundreds of miles away the impacts are beginning.
