Camp Presmont is a member of the Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA), which defines camp as “an experience within a temporary community using the outdoor setting and trained leaders to meet spiritual objectives”. Camp has a tremendous impact on young people. Dwelling in a temporary place encourages campers to explore God’s creation, take risks, form community, and build independence. Camp is a means of holistic spiritual formation and leadership development.
The purpose of Christian camping is to remind us where we came from and where we are going. In John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us”. The Greek word translated as “dwelt” is σκηνόω (skēnoō) the word implies a temporary residence or pitching a tent. Jesus Christ came to earth as a temporary sojourner (to camp) in order to redeem us from death and sin. "And they shall be my people, and I will be their God." Jeremiah 32:38 is a core covenant promise spanning from Genesis to Revelation. It signifies a formal relationship of mutual belonging, protection, and faithfulness between God and His people. Revelation 21:3 (ESV) states: “Behold, the dwelling place (tent) of God is with man. He will dwell (camp) with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”
Since the beginning of recorded time, the Creator God has used “camp” experiences to remove people from their normal life to develop them and produce change. Moses, David, and many of the prophets were removed from their families and homes to be prepared for leadership. All of these “temporary” experiences in Scripture are versions of the same pattern we see in our society and world. Today we call these “temporary” experiences vacations, conferences, retreats, off-site strategic planning meetings, short-term mission trips, and college.
