The Building of a Church Greg Gay April 1, 2022
A construction company is building new duplexes on a street near our home. Each day we can see progress and steps of the construction process. A lot is leveled, followed by footings, underground plumbing, and electrical work before the concrete slab is poured. Then, the walls are framed, trusses, roofing, windows, doors, heating and air conditioning are all installed, with carpenters, roofers, electricians, plumbers, masons, and various tradespeople taking their turn. Each step involves quantities of materials expertly assembled by the builders into the exact structure planned by the architect.
Casual onlookers driving by likely have no awareness of the detailed planning and work that goes into such a structure.
In the same way, when we look at the spiritual structure of the Lord’s church, casual onlookers likely have no awareness of the detailed planning and work that was involved in creating such a structure. We find references to the intricate details of the church in the scriptures.
In an exchange with his disciples, Jesus said he would build his church. Matthew 16:13-19 13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" 14 So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16 Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." NKJV
When Jesus said he would build his church, he was not referring to a physical building such as the Jerusalem temple where God was worshiped under the law of Moses. He used the imagery of a physical building to refer to a spiritual structure, a spiritual temple.
In ancient building, the cornerstone is the source of strength for the entire building. In the Lord’s church, that is Jesus: Acts 4:10-12 … Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead… 11 This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." NKJV
The first century prophets and apostles are also part of the foundation of the structure. Ephesians 2:19-22 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. NKJV
All who are members of the Lord’s church are also part of the structure of this holy temple. 1 Peter 2:4-5 4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. NKJV
We become a “living stone” when we obey the gospel in Faith (Romans 10:17, Hebrews 11:6), Repentance (Luke 13:3), Confession (Matt 10:32), and Baptism for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38, Acts 20:16). When we obey the gospel, God adds us to the spiritual house, the Lord’s church (Acts 2:47), identified as the Church of Christ (Romans 16:16).
This spiritual house is an amazing and beautiful structure. It is the exact structure planned by the greatest architect of all, God.
The beauty of the Lord’s church is compared to the relationship that is to exist between husbands and wives. Ephesians 5:22-32 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. NKJV
