It's a gift to introduce you to Lucienne. Her story reflects not only the resilience women in the Chemen Lavi Miyo (CLM), but also the power of someone believing in them.
Lucienne is a 34-year-old mother of four from rural Haiti. She has refused to let hardship define her family’s future. When her family’s farming income collapsed, she kept food on the table through sheer grit – running a small trade business without even a pack animal, walking hours to and from market with loads on her head. She says, “When I get home, I just sit on the rock in the yard – I’m too tired to go inside.”
As a member of the Chemen Lavi Miyo (CLM) program, Lucienne received assets to start a business and a small cash stipend for the first six months of the 18-month program. She used the investment funds provided by CLM to buy livestock. She was able to buy two goats and a small collection of poultry. There was enough left over to buy a piglet, though she had to take one that had not been weaned. Since the piglet was not yet weaned, it was less expensive, but will take more time to start producing for her.
Lucienne likes having livestock because she says it gives her a way to take care of a problem if one arises. She shares, “If one of my kids or my husband needs money for something, I can sell an animal.” Prior to owning livestock, Lucienne did not have access to funds in case of an emergency.
Through a local savings club and now with support from the CLM program, she’s invested in livestock, joined a village savings and loan (VSL) group, and is carefully planning to buy a horse. Not only would a horse make the trips up and down the mountain easier, but it would greatly increase the size of the load she could make those trips with, allowing her to transform her business into something larger than it can be now.
Lucienne’s story is a powerful reminder: with the right support, resilience becomes transformation. You can play a part in providing women like Lucienne with the right support to start theirselves on a path to a better life.
Will you give today to help a woman in Haiti turn hard work into opportunity fueled by hope? Your generosity is more than financial support, it's belief. Belief in her dignity and her potential for transformation. And belief changes everything.
