Good morning from The Farm! For all of those who have asked, we are officially out of the watermelon business. Sometimes you just have to walk away from some things and recognize which doors are being shut and which ones are opening. Last year, we lost the melons to some hungry deer… door one shut. This year, we resolved the deer issue. They tend to stay away when you are blasting music all night from a boom box with flashing lights on the seat of a tractor in the middle of the field (wish I had a picture of that)😳🀣. That couldn’t stop the melons from getting β€œthe wilt”. What I thought was stress from drought, turned out to be the death knell, showing the first signs of sickness. Six inches of rain should have made them perk up. However, it was fuel for the fungus that rapidly spread throughout three acres of watermelons and cantaloupe… door two Slam!!! I have been quiet about it. Thought I could just let it go quietly by the wayside. Y’all deserve better than that. Many people have texted me, called and private messaged me looking for watermelons. Some I answered, some I didn’t. But… Do Not Fret!!! When you are ready for a sweet jubilee watermelon grown right here in Catahoula, you need to get them from Lindsey and Jonathan Bounds! They planted 6 acres of virgin land they recently cleared and they have the prettiest, biggest and yes… sweetest melons around! As far as Eastridge Farm is concerned, we are moving forward with what the good Lord has been blessing us with… honey and lotions from the Catahoula Queen Apiary and our Second Annual Maze at Eastridge Farm… Open doors. See attached rough draft for this years design. We will also have a 1.5 acre field of sunflowers 🌻 to enjoy with the Maze while helping to feed our bees 🐝. A deep, heartfelt Thank You to everyone for supporting us with our watermelons and we value your continued support in our current and future endeavors. If you haven’t already done so, please like and follow us at Eastridge Farm for more updates on The Maze and Catahoula Queen Apiary!

As always ✌️❀️😊🐝🍯🌽

Here is an update from our main farm page.

Good morning from The Farm! First, I (Jim) would like to apologize to anyone for any emotional damage you may have experienced due to the picture of me shirtless in the melon patch, posted by my sweet wife. 🀣 Although, it could have been worse. We’ve been rather busy around here with the 🐝 and πŸ‰. We’ve begun to harvest a little bit of spring honey and lawdy mercy!!! More to come about that. The melons, you ask. Well… they are ”water” melons and we have not been getting much water. Hence the aforementioned photo of me shirtless in the rain. They are working hard to get it together for y’all in time for summer! Aannnd… we are beginning preparations for The Maze. October will be here soon and we have a lot of work to get ready. We are adding a sunflower field this year too! (Ooops😲 did I just say 🌻) Thanks for liking and following our page and putting up with my silliness πŸ€ͺ
As always ✌️❀️😊

***Warning***Long Post***

This post comes with mixed emotions. On one side there is dejection and frustration and on the other excitement and optimism. There will be no melons from me at this time. Just as they started to bloom and a few baby melons had begun to pop out, a herd of deer came through in a period of 3-4 nights and literally wiped me out. If I had not seen the tracks, I would have thought my cows had gotten into the field. Between 2600 and 3000 plants... eaten down to the nub of a vine. Pictures attached . Devastated! To. Say. The. Least. With all that being said... I have some watermelon seeds leftover that I didn't use that I have decided to plant alongside a few pumpkins and a bit of corn. Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and neighbors and to strangers I have met along the way...I would like to officially announce the First Annual Eastridge Farm - Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch. To say we were devastated about the melons being wiped out, is an understatement. However, it pales in comparison to the excitement we have with this new opportunity. We are starting small. Just a simple maze and a pick your own pumpkin and watermelon patch. There will be a maze for adults and a smaller one for children. Picture is attached of a test run performed by "The Professor" Jason Glydewell who is contributing his talents in the design of the maze. We are not professional maze growers...if there is such a thing. Jill and I had a "vision" of having something for the entire family to enjoy. We prayed about it and this was our "epiphany" if you will. This is a work in progress so any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated. So, as far as those Sweet Jubilee Watermelons, I plan to have some late season melons along with some pumpkins. Jack'o'Lanterns and Jack'o'Melons πŸ€”. Praise in the Pumpkin Patch πŸ€” Stay tuned for more information!

Any farming operation is a risk reward. Plant early and risk the reward of an early harvest. We do it the old fashioned way by planting the seeds directly in the field. We aren't high faluting enough to grow thousands of plants in a greenhouse to drop in the dirt way after the threat of frost is gone. The plant growth tripled in numbers in the past week, with new ones popping up daily. Woo Hoo! This past week has also been quiet stressful with a late cold front and the threat of frost and temperatures flirting with the freezing mark. Well... we had a little frost last night/early morning. There were some plants that got "bit" 😳. But for the most part, I believe our early harvest will be intact this year! Many other factors come into play, but thankfully we seem to have dodged a major catastrophe. Until next time βœŒβ€πŸ˜ŠπŸ‰

As I prayed for rain on the watermelons, I began singing this song. Twenty years ago, this song, this live DVD, impacted my life in a mighty way and the floodgates of heaven opened up onto and into my life. That is my prayer again for me and also for you. I hope you take 3:31 to watch and listen. If you're going through a difficult situation, I pray you allow God to rain down on your life and wash away any pain, hurt or confusion you may have. βœŒβ€πŸ˜ŠπŸ‰
