A Double Celebration of Gratitude: Phoenix BLIA Volunteers Brave 104°F Heatwave as Buddha’s Birthday Aligns with Memorial Day
In a rare and auspicious coincidence, this year’s sacred Buddha’s Birthday falls on the United States Memorial Day holiday, May 25. To commemorate this double occasion of reflection and gratitude, the International Buddhist Association of Arizona (IBAA) and the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Phoenix Chapter launched a heartfelt “Bathing the Buddha at Home” initiative from May 18 to May 23.
The enthusiasm of BLIA Phoenix Chapter members remained undeterred despite Arizona temperatures nearing 40°C (104°F). Embodying the late Fo Guang Shan founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s philosophy of the “Four Givings” — giving others confidence, hope, joy, and convenience — volunteers devoted their personal time after work to deliver blessings directly into the hearts of devotees.
Mindful of elderly devotees with limited mobility and working professionals with demanding schedules, chapter members and volunteers united in a collective effort to create a compact and beautifully decorated mobile bathing station, complete with a bathing basin, a sacred statue of the infant Prince Siddhartha, and vibrant floral arrangements. The mobile station traveled across three cities — Phoenix, Chandler, and Ahwatukee — visiting five different locations.
The initiative deeply reflected the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism, bringing unexpected joy into homes and workplaces alike. Accompanied by the soothing chanting of the “Verses for Bathing the Buddha,” devotees reverently ladled water over the statue of Prince Siddhartha, moving several homebound elders and exhausted workers to tears of joy.
“I never imagined that I would be able to participate in the Bathing the Buddha ceremony in my own humble home,” said 95-year-old devotee Jui-Ying Huang, affectionately known as Mama Chang. Overcome with emotion, she expressed profound gratitude to the late Venerable Master Hsing Yun for propagating Humanistic Buddhism and thanked the volunteers for bringing the beloved Prince Siddhartha to her side.
The mobile bathing station also became a catalyst for a joyful multi-generational family reunion. Devotee Annie Chen and her family traveled from out of state during the holiday weekend to visit her mother, Hui-Xian Bi, a longtime BLIA Phoenix Chapter member. Sister Bi shared that the initiative allowed her daughter’s family to experience the home ritual for the first time, planting seeds of Dharma in the younger generation within a warm and loving atmosphere.
The outreach extended beyond residential homes and into local businesses. Qian-Dai Lin, a Fo Guang Shan devotee who has operated a family bakery with her husband for more than thirty years, shared that the relentless demands of running a business had long prevented her from visiting the temple or participating in chapter activities.
“This is only my second time participating in the Bathing the Buddha ceremony,” Lin said as the mobile station arrived at her bakery. “My heart is overflowing with gratitude beyond words.” She added that she hopes to invite more people to future Bathing the Buddha events so they, too, may receive blessings and experience the joy of the Dharma.
Memorial Day in the United States is traditionally a time of remembrance and honor. This year’s observance carried added significance as devotees also honored the birth of the Buddha. Event planner Megan Huang emphasized that Bathing the Buddha symbolizes the cleansing and purification of one’s mind and heart.
“Although the journey across three cities was long, the mission was deeply meaningful,” Huang said. “Through this initiative, we hope to foster harmony throughout our communities, spread joy and blessings, and instill hope and compassion in every household and workplace.”
