“Repent and Be Baptized”
May 31, 2026

I am going to send you what my Father has promised;
but stay in the city until you have been
clothed with power from on high.” (Lk. 24:49)

Waiting for the Spirit to come and give His fruit and His power and strength. Lord, if this church is going to have a new birth of life You will have to come and work in our midst. Jesus did promise:

I will build My church
and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.

Back to Acts, Peter preaches to the people on Pentecost:
Ac 2:22 “Men of Israel, listen to this:
Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you
by miracles, wonders and signs,
which God did among you through him,
as you yourselves know.

23 This man was handed over to you
by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge;
and you, with the help of wicked men,
put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

Wow, not pulling any punches? You did this. Very confrontational preaching, humm, not our favorite style.

24 But God raised him from the dead,
freeing him from the agony of death,
because it was not possible
for death to keep its hold on him.

Nor can it hold us when we trust and are put “in Him”

Remember:
all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into his death?
Yes. Lord.
4 . . . in order that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father,
we too may live a new life. (Rom. 6:3-4)

So,
32 God has raised this Jesus to life,
and we are all witnesses of the fact.
They knew Him, saw Him die and then saw and spoke with Him after He was raised from the dead.

33 Exalted to the right hand of God,
he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit
and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Ac 2:36 “Therefore [Here is the point]
let all Israel be assured of this:
God has made this Jesus,
whom you crucified,
both Lord and Christ.”

How is that for a first sermon? That is coming in pretty hot. And the response could go either way. It will go against Steven in a few months when he preaches his sermon.

Ac 7:54 When they heard this, [Steven]
they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.
Like some sort of wild animal baring its teeth.
55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,
looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God,
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man
standing at the right hand of God.”
Ac 7:57 At this they covered their ears and,
yelling at the top of their voices,
they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city
and began to stone him.
Lord help us, but there was grace with Peter and his listeners, hearts to hear.

Ac 2:37 When the people [back with Peter] heard this,
they were cut to the heart
They were humbled not enraged, it is an incredible contrast. Lord Give Your grace to hear.

The were cut, pierced, this work of the Spirit in us, reaching in surgically, getting through whatever hard things in us that might resist Him and getting a hold on our hearts.
Yes, Lord, Holy Spirit do what You need to in us.

And [they] said to Peter and the other apostles,
“Brothers, what shall we do?”
We can’t do nothing. And here is the answer:

Ac 2:38 Peter replied,
“Repent and be baptized,
These simple life long pillars of our faith. Repent, give your life to Christ, that is what the word really means. And give your life to the cleansing healing waters of the Holy Spirit.

every one of you, [include yourself]
in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins.

Start your life in the deep forgiveness of God, Lord teach us to be forgiven and forgive.

And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Of course, we are not there, we read what they did and said but then we do have the same Hoy Spirit offered to us. Lord, help us hear, think and believe and pour out your Spirit.

39 The promise is for you and your children
and for all who are far off—
for all whom the Lord our God will call.” [Call us Lord]
Ac 2:40 With many other words he warned them;
and he pleaded with them,
“Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”

41 Those who accepted his message were baptized,
and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Revelation Song
How Good It Is

THE MORNING PSALM: 8:
LEADER: 1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
PEOPLE: 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
LEADER: 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
PEOPLE: 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
LEADER: 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
PEOPLE: 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
LEADER: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
PEOPLE: 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

LEADER: 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another (John. 1:16).

PEOPLE: 14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
LEADER: 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
PEOPLE: But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14)

LEADER: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Is. 41:10).

PEOPLE: This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (I Jn 5:14-15).
LEADER: 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him

LEADER: 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
PEOPLE; 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Rom. 6:3-4)

OPENING PRAYER: (all)
O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the Maker of all things seen and unseen, the Savior of all both near and far: By your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty, that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying: Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord most high. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREET ONE ANOTHER:

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Genesis 1:1—2:4a;
LEADER:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
PEOPLE: 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
LEADER: Ge 1:6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
PEOPLE: 9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
LEADER: 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
PEOPLE: 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.
LEADER: 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
PEOPLE: 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
LEADER: 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
PEOPLE: 24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.
LEADER: 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
PEOPLE: 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
LEADER: 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
PEOPLE: 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
LEADER: 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
PEOPLE: 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
LEADER: 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
PEOPLE: :2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
LEADER: 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

GOSPEL READING: Matthew 28:16–20:
LEADER: 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
PEOPLE: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
LEADER: 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
PEOPLE: And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age

Nicene Creed: (Pastor)
LEADER: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
PEOPLE: We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.
LEADER: For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
PEOPLE: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
LEADER: We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN: “Holy! Holy! Holy! Lord God Almighty” 323

“SEARCH MY HEART O GOD” (all)
And this is my prayer: That your love may grow stronger every day in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to see what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS:
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:11-12) In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Gloria Patri 142: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

“Prophesy, Visions and Dreams”
May 17, 2026

Ac 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came,
they were all together in one place.

They are waiting, ten days, a lot had happened so maybe it was good to have some “down time” to adjust. Remember, before Jesus returned to the Father he said:

I am going to send you what my Father has promised;
but stay in the city until you have been
clothed with power from on high.” (Lk. 24:49)

Waiting for the Spirit to come and give power, strength.
Waiting, that is typically not a thing we like to do.

Our Pentecostal brothers and sisters may know more about this than us. In their worship they sing and praise and wait for the Sprit to move in their midst. Maybe it gets too emotional or too loud for us, at times, I don’t know, but this waiting for the Spirit is critical to their worship. And we want to respect that. And it may be a good thing for us to think about with our order of worship so carefully laid out every Sunday. Sometimes I think we should spend more time in music to let the Spirit do the things He wants to do in the music.

And sometimes I think we should hold up the bulletin every Sunday after the praise set and pray “Lord please use these things we plan to work in our midst by Your Spirit.

Jesus taught:
God is Spirit [and person, “I am who I am”]
and His worshipers
must worship in Spirit and truth John (4:24)
Holy Spirit come and speak truth. “He sent His word and healed them.”

As Presbyterians we plan worship as a time and space to read sacred words, pray, sing, and study. And, we do that trusting the Spirit to act through these things.

But it is good to remember the first Pentecost came unplanned:
2 Suddenly
They were waiting not knowing what to expect.
a sound like the blowing of a violent wind
came from heaven
and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They are in the middle of a storm; it is all around them. This is potentially scary. Are we okay with that?
3 They saw what seemed to be
tongues of fire that separated
and came to rest on each of them.
Each one of them is sought out and affected; it is not happening just in the room or to someone else but to each of them. Do we want that?

And here is the question I wonder: are we secretly glad this kind of thing does not happen in our worship. And does that attitude, that resistance push the Spirit away? I don’t know, maybe that is an unfair question, but maybe not.

4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
There it is again, “Lord fill, us and this place with Your Spirit.
and began to speak in other tongues
as the Spirit enabled them.

This turned out to be human languages other people understood. This is different than the gift of tongues in I Cor 14. That is a whole other discussion.

Other people heard all this noise
6 When they heard this sound,
a crowd came together in bewilderment,
because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7 Utterly amazed,
How can this be happening, no clue.
they asked: we hear them declaring
the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
The Spirit inspires the praise of God. It wells up inside them and the words come out
12 Amazed and perplexed,
they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

That is a good question, some people just say, wow, and move on. The key is to stop and ask, seek, and search out the meaning. That is what we want to do.

But then there were also others quick to make fun, there is always someone around to do that.
Ac 2:13 Some, however, made fun of them and said,
“They have had too much wine.’”

But let’s stick with the first group. Peter explains:

16 this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
Ac 2:17 “ ‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Ac 2:18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.

The Spirit will be poured out in a new way, not just on prophets and kings but on everyone. Prophesy, visions and dreams are promised.
The Spirit will come to speak and stir inside us. Do we want that?

After his great sin with Bathsheba David prays:
You desire truth in the inward being
A right heart, appetites, and dreams above all things. And so, we pray: therefor teach me wisdom [truth]
in my secret heart

Now it is also clear that in Acts the Spirit is sent to empower our witness to the world, to give us courage and boldness. Lord help, us.

Prayer: “Lord, pour out Your Spirit on us do something new here and bring new life to this church.”

PEOPLE: He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3)

THE MORNING PSALM: 104
LEADER: 24 How many are your works, O LORD? In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
PEOPLE: 25 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small.
LEADER: 26 There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.
PEOPLE: 27 These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time.
LEADER: 30 When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.
PEOPLE: 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works—
LEADER: 32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke.
PEOPLE: 33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
LEADER: 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

LEADER: 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.
PEOPLE: 23 “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
LEADER: 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

PEOPLE: 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil.4:6-7).

LEADER: 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
PEOPLE: 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:17-18)

LEADER: 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Is. 40:31)
PEOPLE: I can do all things through Him who strengthen me. (Phil 4:13)
LEADER: “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Ps 46:10)

OPENING PRAYER: (all)
Almighty God, at the feast of Pentecost you sent your Holy
Spirit to the disciples, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel; empower us with that same Spirit to witness to your redeeming love and draw all people to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREET ONE ANOTHER:

Acts 2:1–21:
LEADER: Ac 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
PEOPLE: 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
LEADER: 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—
PEOPLE: we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 3 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.’”
LEADER: 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “ ‘In the last days, God says,
PEOPLE: I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
LEADER: 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood
PEOPLE: before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

THE EPISTLES: 1 Corinthians 12:1–13:
LEADER: 1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.
PEOPLE: 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
LEADER: 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
PEOPLE: 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
LEADER: 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
PEOPLE: 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
LEADER: 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
PEOPLE: 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

GOSPEL READING: John 7:37–44:
LEADER: 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
PEOPLE: 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
LEADER: 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
PEOPLE: 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “He is the Christ.” Still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
LEADER: 42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”
43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

Revelation 21:1-5: (all)
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
HYMN: “Breath on Me, Breath of God” 161

INVITATION TO REFLECTION AND CONFESSION:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. (Gal. 5:22-26)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:8-9)

Amen, Amen.
