Prayers for our Delaware-Maryland Synod Assembly June 5-6 Ellicott CIty
Synod means “walking together” from many directions. As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, we are connected with other Lutheran churches as well as Christians of all types throughout the whole world.
Our congregation sends rostered and lay voting members to an annual synod assembly. “Gathered under the theme "Christ be our Courage, Christ is our Hope" from Joshua 1:9, we will worship, study scripture, tend the business of the synod, and network with ministries from across our territory and the whole church to find renewed strength, courage, and hope to be the church, the body of Christ for the sake of a world God loves.”—Bishop Bill Gohl
I am thankful we have voting members attending for the first time: Dave Becker and Donna Sue Watson joining our Pastors and Deacon Doug Koerber. Our assembly will be in intense prayer about the various wars in the world; responding to the noisy change for hunger; and the rise of hate-filled violence.
The good news is that our church is always being called to reformation and courageous love in action. In 1832 Jehu Jones Jr was the first African American ordained in the Lutheran Church. In 1970 the first woman, Elizabeth Platz, was ordained in the Lutheran Church. In 1991, the ELCA stated that "Gay and le***an people, as individuals created by God, are welcome to participate fully in the life of the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.”
We strive to make our church a place that is safe and welcoming for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We realize that this has not always been the case and we, both the Church universal and our own congregation, need repentance to make sure that all of God’s children know they are welcome fully.
